Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Rationale
Artifact Description: The following artifact is a Test Analysis that I created for a group of students based on chapter 12 from the Woolfolk Textbook, “Motivation in learning and teaching.” Bloom's taxonomy questions were used throughout the test, which consists of eight multiple-choice and two essay questions. The objective of this test is to monitor and assess students to determine where they are academically to make decisions. This test analysis was made for my Educational Psychology class at Trinity Christian College
IPTS Standard 7: This Constructed Test and Analysis has helped me understand the use of technology and the effectiveness of monitoring each student. As a competent teacher, “effectively uses appropriate technologies to conduct assessments, monitor performance, and assess student progress” (7O).
I constructed my test using Google Forms, which allowed me to input the student name and email as a requirement before submitting each test. This feature allowed me to recognize the student taking the test with an email included as well. With their email, I can deliver feedback on the incorrect questions. Also, I was able to “understand how to make data-driven decisions using assessment results to adjust practices to meet the needs of each student (7G). Google forms allowed me to determine the test average and the questions students struggled the most with. With the question that was mostly incorrect by the class, I can discuss the reason of why they got the question incorrect with the use of the textbook as a support of my claim. I can develop decisions through this analysis and test before planning my lesson to guide me in the areas my class needs more in-depth information.
Knowledge and understanding through this artifact: After creating this artifact I have learned the importance of assessment and data-driven decisions for the academic improvement of each student. With the constructed artifact can help me share the information with parents and staff before making any decision for the student achievement. Yet, through this artifact, I can make accommodations for the betterment of the student prior next assessment. With the assessment, I can develop goals for the student to meet. This artifact can help me deliver effective and efficient instruction for my students by the feedback I provide them for their work. With the feedback I provide them they can go back and correct their mistakes and avoid making the same mistakes.
Artifact Description: I had each student fill an exit slip to determine any areas of improvement with the lesson. This formative assessment was helpful to keep the students engaged and focused as they used prior knowledge to fill the exit slip list.
IPTS Connection: The competent teacher involves students in self-assessment activities to help them become aware of their strengths and needs and encourages them to establish goals for learning (7L). Exit slips made all students aware of their strengths and needs to establish goals for their own learning.
Learning Description: This artifact was a helpful use to determine if the students comprehended today's lesson. This formative assessment tool was helpful to connect and plan my following lesson to the understanding of each student.
