Standard 3 - Planning for Differentiated Instruction – The competent teacher plans and designs instruction based on content area knowledge, diverse student characteristics, student performance data, curriculum goals, and the community context. The teacher plans for ongoing student growth and achievement.
Rationale:
a. The Accommodation and Modification artifact allowed me to figure out strategies to use with students with disabilities. In my student teaching my classroom setting has some English limited learning students (ELL). I developed knowledge of five disabilities and strategies I could implement if symptoms are present. This is a great concept to use in class to enrich student’s education.
Standard 3 (3G)
b. The artifact helped me understand the needs of an individual to enhance the student’s learning in the classroom, “the competent teacher understands the appropriate role of technology, including assistive technology, to address student needs, as well as how to incorporate contemporary tools and resources to maximize student learning. Designing the chart of accommodations and modifications helped me understand the needs of a student and help with contacting the adequate resources through the use of technology.
Self-Reflection.
c. This artifact prepared me to figure out options to help the student in need. For example, a student with visual impairment can be helped with a bigger font on paper or a device. Besides, a physical modification can be to move the student closer to the board to visualize instruction clearer. These accommodations and modifications were developed in this artifact. I will further look into this artifact to recall strategies for a specific disability.
Rationale
a. The study guide week 3 document and PowerPoint were the artifacts that made me curious to learn more. The three topics in the study guide were ADHD, Emotional Behavior, and gifted students. For the document, I had to research the three topics and build a PowerPoint that expressed my thoughts and point of view. Made me feel like I was teaching the class on the three topics when using PowerPoint to add images and words to each slide.
b. Standard 3 (3P)
The competent teacher “works with others to adapt and modify instruction to meet individual student needs” (3P) (ISBE, 2013). As an educator, I want to work with the other staff and develop strategies to encounter those three topics of ADHD, emotional behavior and gifted students. As emotional behavior is an area where social workers work best, I want to inform and share my input with the staff for a better education for the student. The more input I share the better the student can receive instruction as the IEP is developed by the team.
c. Self- Reflection
This artifact made me intrigue to learn more, because of personal experiences. I have friends in school who were labeled ADHD. Their disability made me get out of my comfort zone and help them in class and their daily lives. Better yet, Having the opportunity to create a document and record my thoughts on PowerPoint helped me understand the disability more and develop accommodations and modifications for the student.
