Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
Artifact Description: In this artifact a fine arts lesson was developed throughout the theme of Christmas. We incorporated many young actors throughout the making of this Christmas play. The use of literacy in the fine arts helped developed a clear understanding for all children who participated.
IPTS Connection: understands the cognitive processes associated with various kinds of learning (e.g., critical and creative thinking, problem-structuring and problem-solving, invention, memorization, and recall) 2 and ensures attention to these learning processes so that students can master content standards (2C). All the children who participated in the play memorized their lines and performance of the play.
Learning Description: The use of literacy in the fine arts was effective to involve all children in the making of the play. The final acting product was displayed to all participants in the play to visualize the areas of improvement that are needed.
Artifact Description: I developed a book unit, "The Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors." Throughout this book unit, students used evidence based practice to help them understand the connection of literacy in the class activities.
IPTS Connection: understands the relationship among language acquisition (first and second), literacy development, and acquisition of academic content and skills (2H). Students understood the relationship of language and literacy used throughout the book unit plan as it provided modifications of both English and Spanish languages. Having both languages allows the student to interact with the book unit activities.
Learning Description: My book unit artifact was well organized that incorporated common core standards. This artifact was used throughout my student teaching and students enjoyed having both the Spanish and English languages in the activities performed.
