Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Artifact Description: In this artifact student used prior knowledge and the book to answer the chapter questions that were designed for a week of lesson planning. The students studied the characters in chapter 9,10,11 through reading and writing.
IPTS Connection: The competent teacher understands how to use a variety of formal and informal assessments to recognize and address the reading, writing, and oral communication needs of each student; (6H) and knows appropriate and varied instructional approaches, including those that develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas (6I).
Learning Description: After completing the week of reading and writing of these three chapters, the student enjoyed the interaction of literacy and instructional approaches. In addition, the activities were completed in both English and Spanish languages to enforce and improve the student's understanding. I understand that every lesson requires the fundamental skills of reading, writing, and oral communication, so it is important to produce thorough, difficult work. . My goals are to make students love literacy, comprehend the English text through supports provided and build memories in my classroom.
Artifact Description: This artifact was designed for students to utilize the book to identify and compare character traits with an assigned character from the book. All students used the book for reading, writing and oral communication to discuss their character in their groups.
IPTS Connection: The competent teacher teaches students to analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and summarize information in single texts and across multiple texts, including electronic resources (6O). The teacher provided a character analysis worksheet to support the students in analyzing the character and their traits.
Learning Description: The artifact was effective in the use of different components of the lesson to increase the content of learning. The students had a great time comparing and contrasting the character traits in the book.Analyzing character traits made several students reflect on their own traits as well. This artifact was effective for a student self-reflection.
