Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
Writing Assignments
Writing assignments highlights 6P teaches students to develop written text appropriate to the content areas that utilizes organization (e.g., compare/contrast, problem/solution), focus, elaboration, word choice, and standard conventions (e.g., punctuation, grammar). I work with students on the writing assignments. I give students a writing prompt as seen in the picture and they have to create a paragraph of at least five sentences to finish the writing prompt. I make sure students are utilizing organizations, word choice, standard conventions, focus, and elaboration. Having students work on there letter size and placement.
New Words
During reading I provide opportunities for students to encounter and interact with new words in context while reading. Encouraging them to use context clues, word roots, prefixes/suffixes, and dictionaries to determine word meanings. This coincides with 6A which states that a teacher understands appropriate and varied instructional approaches used before, during, and after reading, including those that develop word knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and strategy use in the content areas. This each students to look for context clues within the sentence or paragraph where the unfamiliar word appears. Encourage them to consider the surrounding words, phrases, and sentences to infer the meaning of the word. Also, how to use dictionaries, both print and online versions, to look up word meanings, pronunciations, and usage examples.
