The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
This is an email confirming my membership to the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (IAHPERD), a professional organization that advocates for the profession.
This artifact shows that I "participate in professional development, professional organizations, and learning communities... to enhance personal growth and development" (9O). Through joining this organization I have also grown in my knowledge of being "an advocate, the process of advocacy, and its place in combating or promoting certain school district practices affecting students" (9F).
I have learned a good deal about the process of advocating for legislation and the profession. I have filed witness slips for legislation, which is something I had no experience with before joining this organization.
These are remarks I wrote to speak at our education commissioning prior to graduation. Through this process I was able to reflect on my own professionalism and gain a better understanding of what professionalism means in education.
I have been asked to speak at this event because other professionals in education feel I represent "professional behavior that reflects honesty, integrity, personal responsibility, confidentiality, altruism and respect", which I now understand (9I). I did much reflecting when writing this speech which shows that I am also capable of meeting indicator 9K "reflects on professional practice and resulting outcomes; engages in self-assessment; and adjusts practices to improve student performance, school goals, and professional growth" (9K).
