The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student 6 growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
This test construction and analysis proves that I can not only be a competent teacher, but an excellent one. When it comes to assessing students, I understand the importance of being able to not only create, but administer, analyze, and interpret assessments. I plan on executing formal assessments similar to the one provided here along with informal assessments throughout the year. This will help to ensure I am covering Standard 7 – Assessment with confidence. My use of formal and informal assessments would fall under section 7K which states, “appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to evaluate the understanding, progress, and performance of an individual student and the class as a whole.”
The use of google technologies to create, score, and keep records of all my participants allows me to cover even more of Standard 7, specifically sections 7M “maintains useful and accurate records of student work and performance” and 7O which says “effectively uses appropriate technologies to conduct assessments, monitor performance, and assess student progress”, being flexible with assessments makes me not only easily adaptable, but will allow me to keep students engaged with new ideas for assessments as they come along in my continued research. This technology also makes it easy to communicate these scores to the participants. There are easy ways to reach the participants with feedback and ways for students to get in touch with me as well.
Having all of the results and data online allows for easy transfer between participants and any other need to know people who would fall under section 7N of Standard 7 “accurately interprets and clearly communicates aggregate student performance data to students, parents or guardians, colleagues, and the community in a manner that complies with the requirements of the Illinois School Student Records Act [105 ILCS 10], 23 Ill. Adm. Code 375 (Student Records), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 USC 1232g) and its implementing regulations (34 CFR 99; December 9, 2008).
The analysis I have attached with the test form clearly shows that I know how to interpret and use the results to plan for future instruction and covers section 7J “uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes” Being able to not only focus on one or two students but also planning for whole class instructional improvement. I also know these results don’t only show where the students need to improve, but more importantly how I can improve as an educator.
This an assessment I created as part of an assignment during Educational Psychology. There is also a test construction and analysis attached.
During this assignment I learned and was able to "understand measurement theory and assessment-related issues, such as validity, reliability, bias, and appropriate and accurate scoring ", which will be an asset going forward (7J). I am also able to assess all levels of thinking as shown in this assessment and analysis which meets the indicator "7D) understands current terminology and procedures necessary for the appropriate analysis and interpretation of assessment data" (7D).
I learned how to construct a complete assessment targeting all levels of thinking. I was also able to analyze that data and come up with useable numbers that would help me construct more assessments and target learning to certain individuals if needed.
This is a lesson that I used during Pre Student Teaching to teach some early bowling concepts and vocabulary. It demonstrates and outlines both a psychomotor and ELA objective with their associated assessments.
This lesson and it's assessments show that I "know" and can implement "assessment and progress monitoring techniques to assess the effectiveness of instruction for each student" (7I). This assessment also provides data that will help in using "assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes" (7J)
While developing and receiving feedback on this lesson, I was able to learn what a good lesson plan complete with a good assessment to track student learning looks like. Being that tracking our student's progress is so important I will continue to use these types of assessments going forward.
