1. Teaching Diverse Students

The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.

Philosophy of Education - Fernandez.pdf

This artifact is a contextual factors research paper I did during my time at Trinity.  This was done during pre-student teaching, but applies to student teaching as well, being that I was at the same placement for both. The purpose of this assignment was to gain more contextual knowledge about my placement.

While researching for and writing this paper, I was able to better "understand how teaching and student learning are influenced by... economic circumstances and diversity within the community" in a way I wasn't able to before (1C).  I am now armed with the knowledge and resources that will allow me to create "a learning community in which individual differences are respected" (1K).

I learned a lot about how to research schools and communities I will be working at so I can develop instruction that will best allow my students grow.

Midterm - Fernandez.docx

This an essay I wrote as part of a midterm for my Equity and Access for Learning and Life class, in which we had to reflect on our view and perspective for teaching.

This essay really helped me reflect on my own personal experiences to ensure I could "understand his or her personal perspectives and biases and their effects on one’s teaching" in order to be a competent teacher (1F).  Being able to reflect on my own experiences and understand everyone has their own story will ensure I am a teacher that "facilitates a learning community in which individual differences are respected" (1K)

I reflected upon my own education like I never had before. completing this assignment reinforced why I need to make sure I create an equitable and accessible learning environment for all.
