When I think of diversity and inclusion the first thing that comes to mind are identities. I feel the best way to be inclusive is to be open to diversity. This means being open to and embracing every student and their individual identities. We of course, cannot do this without getting to know our students and showing them that we care who they are. I think the best way to do this is to hold discourse with students often so every student can learn about and understand different identities and express their feelings about the world around them. Rather than shy away from often challenging tasks like being inclusive, I want to give students the chance to express their identities and show others that our differences make us all better rather than incompatible.
Throughout my preservice learning thus far I have engaged with a diverse population of students and families while aiding in variety of ways including but not limited to individual instruction, socialization/participation encouragement, helping fulfill needs in the community by volunteering time and effort, as well as getting to know them and their interests. I plan to continue that type of interaction as I proceed with my future students. One aspect of inclusion I am committed to use in my classroom is universal design for learning. Making learning accessible to as many students as possible will only benefit the learning environment. I plan to offer several options for participation and engagement as some students may be uncomfortable or unable to perform in a standard learning environment. I also want to offer several options for assessment, I feel students may be able to express what they have learned better if they are doing so however they choose. I will offer students choices of written work, visual and oral presentations, and group work so students can learn and grow together. While things are getting better in terms of diversity and inclusion, I know there is much to be done. I am committed to staying on top of research for best practices and being open to new ideas for inclusivity in Physical Education. When we are all committed to diversity and inclusion, we all benefit.
