The competent teacher structures a safe and healthy learning environment that facilitates cultural and linguistic responsiveness, emotional well-being, self-efficacy, positive social interaction, mutual respect, active engagement, academic risk-taking, self-motivation, and personal goal-setting.
This is a lesson plan from student teaching, where I was able to plan and clearly set expectations for the lesson from the start and continue throughout. The instructional plan is highlighted.
This shows that I was able to "create clear expectations and procedures for communication and behavior and a physical setting conducive to achieving classroom goals" and I was able to reinforce them throughout the lesson (4J). This is a great lesson that helped me "engage students in and monitor... group-learning activities that help them develop the motivation to learn", in an easy way with a simple activity(4N).
I was able to design an activity that require everyone's participation and engagement, but also developed some essential motor skills throughout. I have been able to take what I learned here into other lessons already and will continue to do so going forward to create an environment where everyone learns together.
This is a diversity and inclusion statement I made for my Equity and Access for Learning and Life class. This is the approach I want and am taking as an instructor to ensure a safe and equitable learning environment for my students.
Implementing Universal Design for Learning like I stated in this essay helps ensure that I am able to "create a safe and healthy environment that maximizes student learning" (4I). Being that I want ALL students to have the opportunity to learn equally, UDL will always be a part of my goal in classroom design.
Completing shows that I have the desire and tools to implement and explain my approach for equitable access to learning.
