The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This is a research paper from my Literacy in the Disciplines class. We were tasked with researching literacy in our specific discipline and ways to incorporate it.
With this assignment I was able to better "recognize the relationships among reading, writing, and oral communication and understands how to integrate these components to increase content learning", specifically Physical Education (6F). This assignment also reinforced the importance of holding discourse in my class and will ensure I "stimulate discussion in the content areas for varied instructional and conversational purposes" (6S).
Through the completion of this assignment I was able to learn many strategies that work, like journals and discourse, and how to incorporate them in my future classroom.
This is a photo of our power/vocabulary word wall in the gym. We use this to help develop and reinforce vocabulary during our lessons.
This word wall helps us "integrate reading, writing, and oral communication to engage students in content learning", in an easy way. We have students go read or spell words from the word wall to progress certain activities, like getting unfroze in a tag game, or using words to communicate with partners (6Q). The list is some P.E. vocabulary as well as schoolwide vocabulary, which helps meet the indicator 6R "works with other teachers and support personnel to design, adjust, and modify instruction to meet students’ reading, writing, and oral communication needs" (6R).
While developing this with my cooperating teacher and other staff, I learned how important and rewarding using this strategy can be. It is something I will take with me going forward.
