Online teachers must be able to design assessments, in many forms, that truly measure the objectives of the course. They must also be adept at using formative assessment to guide future instruction.
During my course work for the endorsement program I had the chance to create one fully online unit that included assessment. I included self-reflection as well as questions on the mathematical content of the lesson. Also, in my current position, I often use Desmos for formative assessment.
