The Manyara Region derives its name from Lake Manyara, one of the major lakes formed during ancient times by the Great Rift Valley. This region is unique in Tanzania as it is bisected into two parts by the Great Rift Valley. Lake Manyara is a vital water source for wildlife, playing a crucial role in the ecosystems of the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Tarangire National Park. It is also the largest breeding ground for tens of thousands of flamingos in the country.
The Lodge is situated in the town of Karatu on the western south slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater at an elevation of 1,400 feet above sea level. Following breakfast, embark on a journey to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, equipped with lunch boxes provided by the lodge. Your destination is the Ngorongoro Crater, where you'll descend to the crater floor for a half-day game drive. The Ngorongoro Crater is an incredible natural wonder, with an abundant and diverse wildlife population waiting to be discovered.
After your rewarding game drive in the crater, it's time to continue your adventure. In the afternoon, you'll drive to Tarangire for your overnight stay. Tarangire National Park is renowned for its large herds of elephants and diverse landscapes, making it an excellent location for wildlife encounters. Enjoy a peaceful night in the heart of this unique wilderness.
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is truly a remarkable place, covering 2,286 square kilometers of diverse and breathtaking landscapes. It includes the volcanic region around the Ngorongoro Crater, which boasts the still active volcano of Oldonyo Lengai and the world-famous Olduvai Gorge, a site of significant archaeological discoveries.
The Ngorongoro Crater itself is the jewel of this area, recognized as the largest unbroken caldera in the world. The moment you lay eyes on it, you'll be captivated by its beauty and grandeur. While the crater's floor covers only 100 square miles, it is teeming with approximately 30,000 animals, including a high concentration of predators. This unique and pristine environment offers visitors an opportunity to witness an incredible array of wildlife and a true connection with nature.
The crater supports up to 25,000 large mammals. Grazers dominate, with zebra, wildebeest (accounting for almost half the animals), gazelle, buffalo, eland, hartebeest, and warthog. Giraffes stay away because there is insufficient food at tree level, and topi avoid the area as they compete directly with wildebeest. An interesting feature of the crater's elephants is that they are almost exclusively males. Breeding herds, which consist of large numbers of females and young with a few older males, are probably unable to find sufficient quality food in the crater.
From the elegant wooden central platform where the Lake Burunge Tented Lodge restaurant is located, it's possible to watch the lakeshore for animals that come to drink water. The camp is strategically located in the natural corridor between Manyara and Tarangire, ensuring a spectacle of the migration. The camp is situated 10 minutes from the park entrance known as Sangaiwe.
This camp is the perfect place to relax in comfort after a day of game drives in Tarangire. You can be captivated by the breeze and the colors of the African sunset from your private terrace.

Tarangire National Park derives its name from the Tarangire River, which rises in the highlands of central Tanzania and winds its way through the game sanctuary. The river irresistibly lures the herds of plains migrants from the parched surrounding area to its shrunken, but permanent, brackish waters during the dry season.
The animals come by thousands from as far north as the shores of Lake Natron, dramatically swelling the resident population with wildebeest, zebra, eland, elephants, hartebeest, buffalo, and fringe-eared Oryx. As the rainless days continue, Tarangire's pools become congested with thirsty migrants, and elephants begin to dig for underground streams in the dry riverbed.
