This is a magazine cover for Ski Mag. It is based around a "Park Rat" theme, dark muted colors, and park skiing photos.
Contrast: I contrasted the large title text with the smaller text. This was done both with size and color, and makes the title a central piece. Additionally, contrast is found in the different font choices. A large modern serif font contrasts against a script decorative font. Finally, two alignments are used to keep things interesting.
Alignment: This is one of the strongest parts of the design. The subtext uses a line created by the right side of the skier. This right alignment contrasts with the left alignment in the title. The two different alignment draws two verticle lines through the piece and makes it captivating. I used the title's left alignment to sneak the volume information in the space between "Ski" and "Mag."
Proximity: By separating the title and subtext, there is an obvious difference in meaning drawn. The volume information is kept near the title to relate the two as information about the publication itself. The lower subheading and body text are kept near each other to connect the two.
Color: The original background photograph had a different subject in the center. I masked and transferred over the skier in there now. This required some color adjustments to the mask layer. A desaturation adjustment was used to match the color of the skier with the rest of the background color.
