Growing up, my only knowledge of the Via Appia (or the Appian Way) was the state road that led to the nearby towns of Caserta and Benevento in Campania, southern Italy. It was only years later through chance that I discovered that the Via Appia was once a strategically important Roman road running from Rome to Brindisi on the heel of the boot of Italy. The Appian Way is an ode to this hidden piece history – the dusty asphalt that runs past my Nonna’s flat that millennia ago was the Romans’ regina viarum, or ‘Queen of Roads’.
