Written during a summer spent looking forward to returning to my new home in Cardiff, Wales, Brithdir March is my musical portrait of what I admire about Wales – its inclusivity, sense of community and rich artistic culture as the ‘Land of Song’. Brithdir refers not to the Valleys village, but to the corner of Wales’s capital where I live with the friends who have become my second family during my time so far at Wales’s national conservatoire. The British values of tolerance and embracing of multiculturalism are what I believe has made Wales a fascinatingly multicultural country. My intention is for a piece of music that draws on the rich tradition of the British parade march, but infuses it with a distinct multicultural perspective and internationalist voice, all the while making the most of the opportunities that the practical limitations of the march genre provide.
This piece is dedicated to the Band of the Welsh Guards.
