Madness’s Charm features the dynamic, unique and expressive voice of actor Ace Bindley, currently studying Acting at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. Madness’s Charm combines spoken text (excerpts from Thomas Middleton’s Songs for Shakespeare’s Macbeth) with manipulated melodic cells on bassoon and MIDI harpsichord. My creative process included voice recording, creating loops from recorded musical material, and exploring the relationship between music and spoken word in DAWs. I was keen to explore this little known part of the text of Macbeth - the Songs (all sung by the witches and their various compatriots) were added to the play later by playwright Thomas Middleton, and while they are virtually unheard of today were frequently performed alongside the play during early performances of Macbeth.
