Rosie and the Magic Owl is my soundtrack to a 9-minute theatre piece aimed at lower primary-aged children, devised by actors at the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art. It uses a mixture of software instruments and electronic drone sounds. My process was highly unusual and collaborative, with dramatic ideas being devised in response to my music and vice versa. I began by composing and developing two initial themes – one conveying the wonder of a child’s imagination, the other suggestive of the scale of a mountaintop; the actors then devised a narrative over five days in response to my music using physical theatre and shadow work. In response to this narrative, I then reorganised the various small sections of my musical material to clearly differentiate between the four different settings. The overall message is that the infinite power of our imagination as children remains with us into adulthood, which is a wonderful thing that we should feel free to access at any time.
