Global Engagement is one of the seven CAS learning outcomes which are chosen when starting a new CAS experience/project. Global Engagement involves facing challenges that take place on a global scale, and making an international impact on individuals, communities, or societies abroad.
Selecting the global engagement learning outcome for your CAS project/experience will add global engagement-related questions to your CAS Questions reflection form on ManageBac that are obligatory to answer.
Examples of Global Engagement projects/experiences are those which involve working with others or having an impact on others across borders, on an international and global scale.
Participating in a cultural exchange program: Collaborate with students from a different school or country to plan and participate in a cultural exchange program. This could involve organizing cultural events, sharing traditions, and learning about each other's cultures.
Working on a global health initiative: Collaborate with a non-profit organization or medical professionals to work on a global health initiative. This could involve raising awareness of a health issue, fundraising to support research or treatment, or working on a medical mission.
Participating in a Model United Nations program: Collaborate with other students to participate in a Model UN program. This involves simulating the work of the United Nations and debating global issues with other students from around the world.
Organizing a fundraising event for a global cause: Collaborate with other students to organize a fundraising event for a global cause. This could involve raising money for a charity that works on global issues such as poverty, human rights, or climate change.
Working on a sustainability project: Collaborate with other students to work on a sustainability project that has global impact. This could involve researching and implementing ways to reduce waste, conserve energy, or promote sustainable practices in your community.
These projects would all require strong global engagement skills, including cross-cultural communication, collaboration, and an understanding of global issues. They could help you develop these skills further while also making a positive impact on a global scale.
The International Baccalaureate CAS programme has several learning outcomes, one of which is "Global Engagement." In order to fulfill this learning outcome, students must meet the following requirements:
Investigate the world beyond personal experience: Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of global issues and their interconnectedness. They should be able to analyze and evaluate the impact of these issues on local and global communities.
Recognize and consider multiple perspectives: Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of different cultural perspectives and be able to appreciate and respect diversity. They should be able to reflect on their own cultural biases and consider how they influence their understanding of global issues.
Take action: Students should be able to take action to address global issues. This could involve volunteering with a local or global organization, participating in a global awareness campaign, or organizing a fundraiser or event to raise awareness of a global issue.
Reflect on global engagement experiences: Students should be able to reflect on their global engagement experiences and identify what they have learned about global issues and their own values and beliefs. They should be able to identify areas for improvement and set goals for future global engagement.
Overall, the global engagement learning outcome is designed to help students develop a sense of global citizenship and responsibility. Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of global issues and their interconnectedness, respect and appreciate cultural diversity, and take action to address global issues.
NOTE
This list may not constitute the full list of requirements for this strand as observed by your CAS advisor. This means that your CAS advisor may have specialized requirements which you must achieve in order to use this learning outcome. If you are unsure if your project meets these requirements, consult your advisor.
The Global Engagement learning outcome received a difficulty rating of 3.2 according to Diploma Programme students at the International School of Breda placing this learning outcome as the second most difficult to complete outcome or 2nd in difficulty (Out of 7).
The Difficulty Rating
The difficulty rating is a spectrum created to measure how much students struggle with CAS learning outcomes. A group of CAS students is asked to rate each learning outcome on a scale of 1-5 on its difficulty level and the average rating is the difficulty rating. All the averages are then laid out and ranked from highest (Hardest difficulty) to lowest (Easiest difficulty).
