Collaborative skills is one of the seven CAS learning outcomes which are chosen when starting a new CAS experience/project. Collaborative skills involve facing challenges with others and practicing your communication and collaboration skills by working with others.
Selecting the collaborative skills learning outcome for your CAS project/experience will add collaborative skills-related questions to your CAS Questions reflection form on ManageBac that are obligatory to answer.
Examples of Collaborative Skills projects/experiences are those which involve working with others in order to overcome challenges and broaden your communication and team-working skills.
Organizing a community service event: Collaborate with other students and community members to plan and execute a service project in your local community. For example, you could organize a park cleanup, a food drive for a local food bank, or a fundraiser for a local charity.
Participating in a group research project: Work with a team of classmates to research and present on a topic of mutual interest. You could focus on a current event, a historical event, or a scientific topic, for example.
Creating a school-wide initiative: Collaborate with other students to identify a need within your school and come up with a plan to address it. For example, you could work on a recycling program, a peer tutoring program, or an anti-bullying campaign.
Developing a business or product: Work with a group of classmates to develop a business idea or create a new product. This could involve market research, product design, and marketing, among other things.
Participating in a cultural exchange program: Collaborate with students from a different school or country to plan and participate in a cultural exchange program. This could involve organizing cultural events, sharing traditions, and learning about each other's cultures.
These projects would all require strong collaborative skills, including communication, teamwork, and problem-solving, and could help you develop these skills further while also making a positive impact in your community.
The International Baccalaureate CAS programme has several learning outcomes, one of which is "Collaborative Skills." In order to fulfill this learning outcome, students must meet the following requirements:
Work effectively with others: Students should be able to collaborate with others in a variety of contexts, including small and large groups. They should be able to communicate effectively, listen actively, and contribute their own ideas and perspectives while also respecting the ideas and perspectives of others.
Plan and organize collaborative activities: Students should be able to plan and organize collaborative activities, taking into account the needs and strengths of each member of the group. They should be able to delegate tasks and responsibilities and work to ensure that everyone is working towards a common goal.
Solve problems collaboratively: Students should be able to work together to identify and solve problems. They should be able to generate creative solutions and evaluate the pros and cons of each option. They should also be able to reflect on their collaborative problem-solving process and identify areas for improvement.
Reflect on collaborative experiences: Students should be able to reflect on their collaborative experiences and identify what they have learned about working with others. They should be able to identify their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to collaboration and set goals for improvement.
Overall, the collaborative skills learning outcome is designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to work effectively with others, both in their personal and professional lives.
NOTE
This list may not constitute the full list of requirements for this strand as observed by your CAS advisor. This means that your CAS advisor may have specialized requirements which you must achieve in order to use this learning outcome. If you are unsure if your project meets these requirements, consult your advisor.
The Collaborative Skills learning outcome received a difficulty rating of 2.3 according to Diploma Programme students at the International School of Breda placing this learning outcome as the fourth least difficult to complete outcome or 4th in difficulty (Out of 7).
The Difficulty Rating
The difficulty rating is a spectrum created to measure how much students struggle with CAS learning outcomes. A group of CAS students is asked to rate each learning outcome on a scale of 1-5 on its difficulty level and the average rating is the difficulty rating. All the averages are then laid out and ranked from highest (Hardest difficulty) to lowest (Easiest difficulty).
Assessment of Difficulty Rating for Collaborative Skills
Difficulty: Medium
Rating: 2.3/5
Ranking: 4th in difficulty (Out of 7)
