Service is one of the three CAS strands which are assigned to CAS projects/experiences. Service involves supporting other communities and societies through supportive acts. In addition to benefiting another community, the experience/project should prove to be a learning experience for the student.
Selecting the service strand for your CAS project/experience will add service-related questions to your CAS Questions reflection form on ManageBac that are obligatory to answer.
TIP: Service CAS experiences are often paired with the following learning outcomes: Strength & Growth, Ethics of Choices & Actions, Global Engagement. Do they apply to your experience?
Examples of service CAS projects/experiences are those which involve supporting another community or society such as creating supply boxes for people in need, raising money for charity, and volunteering at a retirement home. It is important to ensure that the project is a new occurence for the student. Being unique and creating a memorable experience based on personal interests and hobbies will help the student to be motivated to complete their goal for the experience. With this said, it is important not to confuse this information with choosing an experience in a field the student is very familiar with. It is still important to challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone by trying something new.
TIP: An example from the International Baccalaureate Organization for a service CAS experience can be found HERE.
