Commitment & Perseverance is one of the seven CAS learning outcomes which are chosen when starting a new CAS experience/project. Commitment & Perseverance involves facing challenges and demonstrating how you are able to overcome them and continue your experiences without giving up despite difficulties.
Selecting the Commitment & Perseverance learning outcome for your CAS project/experience will add commitment and perseverance-related questions to your CAS Questions reflection form on ManageBac that are obligatory to answer.
Examples of Commitment & Perseverance projects/experiences are those which push students to face challenges and remain on their toes by facing them head-on rather than giving up.
Running a marathon for charity: This project involves setting a goal to complete a marathon and raising money for a charity. It requires dedication to training, overcoming physical and mental obstacles, and persevering through the physical demands of running a marathon.
Organizing a community clean-up: This project involves identifying an area in the community that is in need of cleaning up, organizing a team of volunteers, and dedicating time and effort to clean up the area. It requires commitment to the cause, overcoming obstacles such as bad weather or lack of resources, and persevering through the hard work of cleaning up the area.
Learning a new language: This project involves setting a goal to learn a new language and dedicating time and effort to studying and practicing the language. It requires commitment to the goal, overcoming obstacles such as language barriers or lack of motivation, and persevering through the challenges of learning a new language.
Starting a small business: This project involves identifying a need in the community, developing a business plan, and starting a small business. It requires dedication to the goal, overcoming obstacles such as financial constraints or lack of experience, and persevering through the challenges of starting a business.
These are just a few examples of the many types of projects that could demonstrate Commitment & Perseverance in the IB CAS programme. The key is to identify a goal that is meaningful and challenging, and to commit to achieving that goal despite the obstacles that may arise along the way.
The International Baccalaureate CAS programme has several learning outcomes, one of which is "Commitment & Perseverance." In order to fulfill this learning outcome, students must meet the following requirements:
Show dedication to achieving a goal or completing a task: This involves setting a goal or objective, making a plan to achieve it, and sticking to that plan until completion.
Overcome obstacles and setbacks: Students must demonstrate that they are willing to persist in the face of challenges and setbacks and find ways to overcome obstacles to achieve their goals.
Show evidence of learning from experience: Students must reflect on their experiences and identify what they have learned about themselves, their abilities, and their commitment to a task or goal.
Demonstrate initiative and self-discipline: Students must take responsibility for their own learning and demonstrate a high level of self-discipline in pursuing their goals.
Overall, the Commitment & Perseverance learning outcome requires students to be resilient, determined, and focused on achieving their goals, while also being reflective and able to learn from their experiences.
NOTE
This list may not constitute the full list of requirements for this strand as observed by your CAS advisor. This means that your CAS advisor may have specialized requirements which you must achieve in order to use this learning outcome. If you are unsure if your project meets these requirements, consult your advisor.
