Every year, on or around that date, the United Nations organizes commemorative events at its Headquarters and at UN offices around the world.
The United Nations General Assembly adopts resolution (A/RES/58/234) designating 7 April as the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda and encourages "all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other relevant international organizations, as well as civil society organizations, to observe the International Day, including special observances and activities in memory of the victims of the genocide in Rwanda."
By providing information materials which educate on the lessons of the Rwanda genocide, the outreach programme on the Rwanda Genocide and the United Nations focuses on two main themes:
Preventing genocide:
learning the lessons of the genocide in Rwanda in order to help prevent similar acts in the future.
Supporting survivors:
raising awareness of the lasting impact of the Rwandan genocide on survivors, particularly widows, orphans and victims of sexual violence, and the challenges that they still face today.
COMMEMORATIONS
Year 2020:
2020 marks the 26th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, one of the darkest chapters in human history. More than one million people – overwhelmingly Tutsi, but also moderate Hutu, Twa and others who opposed the genocide – were systematically killed in less than three months. On this Day, we honour those who were murdered and reflect on the suffering of those who survived.
