International Civil Aviation Day

The purpose of the International Civil Aviation Day is to help generate and reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of States, and of the unique role of International Civil Aviation Organization in helping States to cooperate and realize a truly global rapid transit network at the service of all mankind. As the UN and world nations have now adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and embarked on a new era in global sustainable development, the importance of aviation as an engine of global connectivity has never been more relevant to the Chicago Convention's objectives to look to international flight as a fundamental enabler of global peace and prosperity. Every five years, coinciding with ICAO anniversaries (2014/2019/2024/2029/etc.), the ICAO Council establishes a special anniversary theme for International Civil Aviation Day; 7 December. Between these anniversary years, Council representatives select a single theme for the full four-year intervening period.

FORUM: International Civil Aviation Day 2020. Connecting the World in Its Time of Need: International Aviation's Pandemic Response.

In its resolution 2309 (2016), the Council identified a number of steps to be taken by Member States to strengthen their implementation of the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The Council has also expressed particular concern that terrorist groups may be actively seeking ways to defeat or circumvent international civil-aviation security measures and to identify and exploit perceived gaps or weaknesses, and has stressed the need for States to introduce appropriate countermeasures. The objective of the special meeting is to enable the Committee to engage with Member States and relevant international and regional organizations on the terrorist threat to international civil aviation, as well as to identify ways to strengthen and promote the implementation of international aviation - security standards and international cooperation in that regard.

A specialized agency of the United Nations, ICAO was created by governments in 1944 to support their diplomacy on international air transport matters. Since that time, countries have adopted over 12,000 standards and practices through ICAO which help to align their national regulations relevant to aviation safety, security, efficiency, capacity and environmental protection, enabling a truly global network to be realized. ICAO forums also provide opportunities for advice and advocacy to be shared with government decision-makers by industry groups, civil society NGOs, and other officially-recognized air transport stakeholders.
