RSS feeds help you customize the information you receive. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a way of feeding updates to your favorite web sites right on your desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device. Teachers need to keep current with trends and issues, and developing an RSS feed for your favorite sites is the best way to make sure that you are always current.
It's like customizing your own newspaper. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a way of feeding updates to your favorite web sites right on your desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device. Teachers need to keep current with trends and issues, and developing an RSS feed for your favorite sites is the best way to make sure that you are always current.
After completing this assignment you will:
Be able to describe an RSS Feed
Identify at least two tools to use for subscribing to RSS Feeds
Create an account in an RSS reader
Subscribe to at least three (3) feeds
Did you ever wonder what that little orange button was that you see on different web sites? An RSS Feed is a way to be notified when updates or new content is added to a web site. This way, you don't have to remember to check a website that you like every day just to see.
RSS Feeds, news groups, blogs and other sites that specialize in information are a must for the 21st century citizen. These tools help you to keep your knowledge up-to-date and help educators become inspired with ideas, learn about new technologies, and connect with other education professionals.
You can add RSS Feeds to your Windows Live Mail, or you can use a web tool like Feedly. Feedly is a site that can be used with Google Chrome and can be found through the Google Chrome store. If you haven't downloaded Google Chrome, it is an excellent browser for use with Google products and tools. As you can see from the screen shot below, when new content is added to your "subscribed" sites, you will get a notification sent to your RSS feed.
A brief one page tutorial on the Feedly RSS feeder is located at iTeachU.
Create a Feedly Account
Locate 3 educational technology sites (i.e., Free Technology for Teachers)
Add these sites to your Feedly page
Take a screen shot of your feedly page and attach.
In a Microsoft Word document, write 2-3 sentences (be honest!) reflectiong on whether or not you liked this tool, whether you will use it in the future, and whether or not you are using this on a web browser or on your smartphone).
Submit your assignment in your course by attaching the image and the reflection.
