Objective: Student will understand the criteria used to evaluate and assess projects by developing a rubric.
The word rubric comes from the latin word "red". As you have noticed in this course, each assignment has a rubric that you can use to assess your progress. This is very important not only for students, but for teachers as well. Developing a rubric can help you to:
Clarify your expectations for an assignment or project
Create consistency in criteria for all students
Provide focused feedback for suggestions for improvement, especially with projects and writing assignments
Break up different tasks and components into a logical order for assessment
This type of assessment tool is very especially useful for web-based projects. A well-designed web-based course should also include rubrics for different projects and writing assignments. This helps students, and also helps educators quickly assess these assignments. (I have had online courses with as many as 45 students!)
Before starting your rubric, explore the following rubric generators available on line.
http://teach-nology.com/web_tools/rubrics/ - Teach-nology.com has an extremely thorough list of different rubric creators categorized by content area.
http://www.schrockguide.net/assessment-and-rubrics.html - Kathy Schrock, the guru to all teachers, includes Common Core sample rubrics for you to review
Rubistar at http://rubistar.4teachers.org/ - Part of 4teachers.org, the Rubistar rubric generator is easy to use, and offers templates that you can modify, and it also offers a Spanish language option.
This project is designed to introduce you to the spreadsheet interface within Microsoft Excel through the creation of an assessment rubric. Through the successful completion of the rubric assignment, you will demonstrate the ability to:
1. Modify page margins and page layout modes
2. Insert headers and footers
3. Modify font styles
4. Modify font colors
5. Modify spreadsheet column and row sizes
6. Modify cell fill color
7. Modify cell borders
8. Modify cell alignment
9. Merge multiple cells together
10. Insert a cell summary calculation
11. Insert a drop-down value list into a cell
After reviewing rubrics and reviewing all the readings and resources, develop a rubric for a student technology project. Use the job aid below to develop your rubric using Microsoft Excel.
Open up Microsoft Word and start a new document. Write a reflection in paragraph formatting about your learning experience in this activity. Use the following questions to guide your reflection:
How much did you know about rubrics before doing this assignment?
As a student, did you ever read rubrics given to you by a teacher?
What types of assignments can you use rubrics with and why?
What other ways can you think of to create rubrics, and do you think using Excel is better, worse or the same than those? Why?
In Canva, click on the Submit Assignment button in the upper right
On the File Upload tab, choose your rubric file (.xlsx)
Click Text Submission and write your reflection
