Jesus met the Samaritan woman at "a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well is there..." Some scholars believe Shechem and Sychar are the same place. Others argue for the modern Arab town of 'Askar.

That woman referred to the Samaritans worshipping on "this mountain". There had been a Samaritan temple on Mt Gerizim.
