King David wanted to buld a Temple for God but, because he had too much blood on his hands, God said that it would be his son, Solomon, who would build it. However, david aquired land for it, buying a threshing floor at a site associated with Moriah where Abraham had prepared to sacrifice Isaac.
Solomon did build it in the 10th century BC. (1 Kings 5-9)
The Jewish system of sacrifices was established in the Temple.
After the division of the kingdom into two, new places of worship, replicating the Temple, were established at Dan in he north and Bethel in the south.
After the fall of Israel in 720 BC, Jerusalem again became the sole site of the Temple.
When the Babylonians captured Jerusalem (586 B.C.) they destroyed the Temple.
Ezra and Nehemiah led the people in rebuilding the Temple. It was dedicated in 515 BC.
Herod renovated and expanded this Temple, finishing it in 20 BC.
Jesus
As an infant, at the time of purification rites,, Jesus was presented in the Temple. Mary and Joseph made offerings of a pair of doves or two young pigeons. While there, Simeon took Him in his arms and prophesied about Him and Anna gave thanks for Him and spoke about Him to all who were looking forweard to the redemption of Jerusalem. They then returned to Nazareth in Galilee. (Luke 2:21-40)
At 12 years of age, Jesus went with His parents to the Temple for the Passover. On their way home, Mary and Joseph realised Jesus wasn't with them. They went back and searched, finding Him in the Temple listneing to, and questioning, the teachers. (Luke 2:41-50) Again, they returned to Nazareth.

The Destruction of the Temple
In 70 AD the Romans, led by General Titus, destroyed the Temple.
Some streams of Orthodox Judaism long for the construction of a third Temple. Some see it as happening when the Messiah comes. Others believe it should be built by the Jews themselves whenever possible.
Some Christians also look forward to the building of a Third Temple believing that passages such as Ezekiel 43:4-7 prophecy that there will be an eternal Temple.
