Sacramental Preparation at Home

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, parents are the primary teachers of their children (CCC 2223). We are blessed to have a robust Catechesis program at Immaculate Conception with great catechists. Together we will help your children grow closer to God through the Sacraments.

Here are some suggestions for your family to help your child prepare for the Sacraments.

Go to Mass together

There are three crucial things to do at home with your children: pray together, read the Bible together, and, most importantly, go to Mass together. It’s rather difficult to prepare to do something you don’t see very often. Make Mass your family’s biggest priority, because it’s the most important thing you can do for your child’s spiritual life (and yours!).

Pray together and read the Bible together

In addition to going to Mass, set a time each day to pray and read the Bible together. Before or after family dinner might be a good time, or right before bed. Also set a time each week that would allow for longer readings and prayer. Your child will receive his or her own bible and prayer book today, and below you will find suggestions for prayers and Bible readings. The prayer book also has a guide to the Mass.

Make a sacred space at home

It may help to have a place in your home set aside for prayer and Bible reading. This could be in your child’s room or near your kitchen or dining room table. You can make a simple prayer table with a low bench or a box; or you might use a shelf that is accessible to the child. Include on the prayer table an icon or crucifix, and decorate it, perhaps with flowers or a plant. Your child may have a routine from praying at atrium, or you may do something like this:

Pray for the Holy Spirit to be your teacher and guide. (You may wish to light a candle.)
Brief Examen for the day: “What is the best thing about your day today? What is the worst thing about your day today? How can we find God in these things?”
A minute or two of silence to get ready to listen to God’s Word.
A Reading from the Bible

A short time for sharing what you hear, what it might mean and how you will respond. (Think of what you might do because of the reading. What does it stir in your heart?)
Closing Prayer: (Offer prayers of thanksgiving or petition, and the prayers your child is learning.)

Some prayers of the Church that your child should know

Notice that we want the children to “know” these prayers, not “memorize” them. While memorized prayers are to be valued, that will come with repetition and time. What’s more important is understanding and familiarity so that we can imbue the prayers with meaning.

The Mass is one long prayer made up of many prayers. Walk through the Mass with your child at home, especially before Mass. They may wish to use a guide at Mass, or they may just wish to follow along without it.

Bible passages to study at home

God is present with us in the reading of his Word and in the Eucharist, which is why Mass is made up of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. If you were to go to Mass every day for three years, you would hear the Bible through. Of course, many of us can’t do that, let alone with children. You can, however, read the daily Mass readings easily with your child.

In addition to a variety of digital and print books, there are several apps and websites that are easy to use. One of the simplest is https://bible.usccb.org. On the right of their main page is a calendar. Simply click on the date and it will bring up the readings for the day. Mass readings are nice because are fairly short and give a reading from different parts of the Bible. You may of course use other devotionals or reading guides.

Haga un espacio sagrado en casa

Puede ser de utilidad tener un lugar especial en su casa para rezar y leer la Biblia. Este espacio puede estar en el cuarto de sus hijos o cerca de la cocina o en el comedor. Usted puede hacer una mesa de oración con una mesita o una caja; o puede usar una repisa que es accesible a los niños. Oraciones de la Iglesia que su hijo debe saber

Tome nota que queremos que los niños “sepan” estas oraciones, no que las “memoricen”. Cuando memorizar las oraciones tiene valor, esto se logra con repetición y tiempo. Lo que es más importante es entender y familiarizarse con ellas para que podamos inculcarles el significado de las oraciones.

La Santa Misa
- La Santa Misa es una oración larga compuesta de muchas oraciones. Repase la Misa con sus niños en casa (paginas 18-24 del libro de oraciones), especialmente antes de la Misa. El tal vez desea usar su guía en Misa o tal vez prefiera seguirla sin su libro.
