The information below is for children preparing to receive First Sacraments.
There are two tracks:
"First Communion" for children who have already been baptized who will receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist
"RCIA" (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, adapted for children) for children who have not been baptized who will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist all at once. RCIA children are with the First Communion children in the atrium and at the Sacraments Assemblies, but they have additional assemblies and they receive their Sacraments at Easter.
Our diocese requires two years of direct catechetical preparation for baptized children preparing for their First Sacraments (First Communion or RCIA), which may take place in or after the second grade. If your child was at Immaculata Catholic School or CGS at the parish last year (or in another program) and is in second grade or higher, he or she may be enrolled this year. Celebration of these Sacraments takes place in the parish where families are members.
If your family is a registered member of Immaculate Conception Church, most of your child's preparation occurs in Atrium at Immaculata or CGS at the parish. You will, however, join with the parish families for the required First Sacraments Assemblies.
It is the whole community who initiates its members by showing a way of life. There is a role for home and a role for the parish. Each of us has a part to play. The aim of the assemblies is to synthesis what has happened in the atrium and what has happened at home over time. You must attend all three assemblies with your child.
