Through their Diversifying Educators grant, Dayton Public is piloting a loan forgiveness program to reduce student debt for teachers of color. The other partner districts are exploring tuition assistance or reimbursement for paraprofessionals and specific work flexibility. The MCESC has already developed a template and will be helping other districts with model programs. Other districts have included this model in their work.
Funding assistance is needed since research shows 91% of Black and 82% of Latinx education majors must fund college via federal loans compared to whites (76%) (Center for American Progress, 2019; Brookings, 2020).
