As a new player, meaning a player with no meta items progression, it is very important to be aware of the difficulty that you should try to complete. Lobbies of only new players should not attempt any games above Hard difficulty.
It is highly recommended for new players to play a few games on either Easy or Normal difficulties to get a feel for the game.
New players joining Extreme, Impossible or Nightmare lobbies should advise the host that they are new. Some experienced players can carry 1 or more players even in higher difficulties. However, the positioning of such players matters and it is important to communicate before the game starts.
Right when the game starts, new players should click the scroll on their builder to receive a free Tier 1 item.
Items that can be worth keeping as a new player are Orb of Darkness, Cloak of Flames, Wand of the Wind or Sobi Mask. Other items can be sold for a helpful bonus 600 gold.
The first towers built by a new player are very important: if none of these tower have synergies, new players are most likely going to start leaking on wave 3 or 4. Tower synergies are very helpful, as they not only improve the towers’ abilities but they also provide impactful all stats bonus.
It is generally recommended to build 2 or 3 tier 1 towers; however, some tier 1 towers can hold the first wave on their own, thus making it possible to rush the first lumber upgrade for 1,000 gold.
Here is a list of which towers new players should be looking out for. In blue are the towers to prioritize to clear waves for each synergy. Do not spend too much wood (if any) trying to land a synergy.
Skeleton Mage + Banshee
Druid of the Talon + Druid of the Claw
Troll Headhunter + Troll Witch Doctor
Troll Witch Doctor + Tauren
Abomination + Ghoul
Goblin shredder
Dryad
Captain + Sorceress (may lead to mana issues)
Around the start of the second wave, players will be able to spend 5 wood to send 5 additional horses to their lane.
Properly timing the send with your towers’ abilities is important, as each horse is worth 150 gold. You can also use your Shackle ability on one of these horses (it will be back up for the first gold round).
Once this challenge is completed, equip the Gold Coins item on your tower that kills the most creeps.
Make sure to read each requirement for your Temple of Tides upgrades. The first Temple of Tides upgrades requires 5 tier 1 towers. Therefore, it is highly NOT recommended for new players to merge tier 1 towers before they have upgraded their Temple of Tides.
Gold Rounds are the primary way for players to earn large amounts of gold. A well-timed Shackle Ability can make a big difference in the amount of gold earned on Gold Rounds. Make sure to have it off cooldown whenever Gold Rounds are approaching, which is after every 5th wave up to wave 25.
New players will often encounter mana issues. It worth keeping an eye out for towers or items that increase the mana regeneration of towers.
It is also worth nothing that ,with early tower synergies, players can sometimes disable the towers autocast ability and micromanage mana that way.
The quicker the Transaction quest can be completed, the better. It not only increases the wood income of all players but also lets players share tier 2 and tier 3 towers. Since new players are very much vulnerable to the game’s RNG, sharing towers with your teammates is essential to beating the game.
Do not send Dragons during a Giant wave or Gold Wave, unless you are 100% certain to kill it quickly. Dragon can easily turn a very peaceful game into a loss.
Do not send Pandas, Illidan, or Pit Lord. You will most likely not be able to kill them. Also, the odds of finding these towers are quite low as a new player. Moreover, Pandas and Pit Lord leaks to other players and can also mess up a game.
Unlocking the Hero altar as a new player is not easy. It requires good knowledge of towers, good timing and a total of 25 Monster Souls.
Players can farm Monster Souls by summoning Spirit Beats with the boat. Greater Spirit Beats are not that easy to kill so new players should probably avoid summoning those.
Once you have enough Monster Souls, summoning and killing the revenant of the Depths (Necropolis) requires adequate preparation. Players need a way to reveal invisible units for a good duration.
It is recommended to summon the Revenant of the Depths when most your towers abilities are off cooldown.
It is also worth nothing that Revenants have a spell shield which allows them to ignore stuns/immobilizing effects. Once the spell shield has been used it goes on cooldown. Therefore, it is advised to wait for that spell shield to be procced, then use the builder’s Shackle on the revenant (you can hear when spell shield is procced).
Items like Orb of Lightning or Wand of Lightning can also help kill the revenant.
(Check out the Unlocking the Hero Altar before wave 10 section for more tips on killing the Revenant of the Depths).
Your very first meta-item that you unlock should be an impactful one. Players should generally choose either Flame Rod, Treant Wisp, or Thor rod. The Goblin and Wagon wisps are also powerful options, but to make good use of them requires a bit of game knowledge.
The flame rod is noticeably impactful as it has quite a low cooldown and solves mana issues.
Once you have purchased both a Wisp and a Weapon, you can choose to either work on your Robe progression or save up for Race Upgrades sold at the Ancient of Galaxy. Note that getting both upgrades for a chosen race will considerably affect the way you play the game. These upgrades are pretty much a prerequisite to consistently beating the game on higher difficulties.
Players should also keep in mind that they can easily purchase a dragon egg and lvl up a dragon of the color of their choice quite easily.
Once a player has unlocked two race upgrades, getting started on a Revenant and the Raven is a good idea.
New players will find that some tier 2 towers like Tinker, Shadow Hunter, Necromancer or Warden can clear waves. Players should not feel obligated to lvl tier 3 towers, especially when playing on Easy or Normal difficulties.
