Certificates
The TDSB offers a certificate to all students who successfully complete the Core French, Extended French and French Immersion programs. Below you will find the descriptions of those certificates.
Core French: Students who complete all 4 credits (Grades 9-12) in Core French qualify for a Certificate of Achievement in Core French. Most secondary schools offer Core French through Grade 12.
Extended French: To qualify for the Certificate of Bilingual Studies (Extended French) students must complete 7 credits in French (4 credits in Extended French and 3 credits in subject courses where French is the language of instruction). Students completing 8 or more credits in French qualify for an Honours Certificate of Bilingual Studies (Extended French). (NOTE: EXTENDED FRENCH IS PHASED OUT)
French Immersion: To qualify for the Certificate of Bilingual Studies (French Immersion) students must complete 10 credits in French (4 credits in French Immersion and 6 credits in subject courses where French is the language of instruction). Students completing 11 or more credits in French qualify for an Honours Certificate of Bilingual Studies (French Immersion).
Core French is offered at all schools, and is a mandatory requirement for Grade 9. For the certificate, select Core French as an elective all four year of high school, then you will obtain the "Certificate of Achievement in Core French" which allows you to take some uni courses in French
Case 1: You are enrolled in the Extended/Immersion Program since Elementary/Middle School
If so, you are automatically granted placement at the nearest secondary school which offers the program. You must submit your official course selection sheet by the deadline
There are several exceptions to this rule. For example, if you go to Bowmore Road Public School, you have the bizzare (but cool) option to choose between two French schools (for Extended): Malvern, and Riverdale, as they are both equally close.
Each middle school which offers the program has a home French school. This is like a Home School (the school closest to your address) but it works by looking at the secondary school (which offers the French Program) closest to your middle school and giving you automatic placement.
Conditions: You have to complete the hours requirement for the French programs in middle school, and successfully graduate middle school (Grade 8). You cannot transfer out of the program during middle school.
Case 2: You are NOT already enrolled in the Extended/Immersion Program since Elementary/Middle School
If so, you must inquire directly at the secondary school stating you wish to attend their Extended/Immersion Program
Requirements: Equivalent background knowledge at French, enough placement slots in the French program at that school
NOTE: Placement is not guaranteed, as the school has a certain, limited, amount of "lottery slots" leftover after they provide for catchment area French students.
