Choosing a high school can be a big challenge for many. In the TDSB, every student is assigned a home school based on their address, which you can find by clicking this link.
However, there are also other alternatives. Students can choose to apply to Specialized Programs (more info below), or an Alternative school. where they will need to, depending on the school:
fill out a written application which will likely include,
Your profile (extracurricular activities, initiatives you participated in, etc.)
Reasons for applying to the school
participate in an entrance exam, (particularly for the STEM schools)
and/or participate in an interview
Typically specialized schools within the TDSB have an acceptance rate of 20% (the top 20% are accepted). If you really want to get into a specific program, such as STEM, multiple schools may offer the same program, so if you apply to multiple schools in the same program, the chances you get into the program may be increased.
You can apply for a maximum of two specialized schools and two regular schools beyond your home school. Choose wisely.
Good luck to you if you are applying to a specialized school, and remember, even if you don't make it to the high school(s) you applied to, it's not the end of the world. There are always other opportunities: high school is just the beginning of the transition to the real world.
Not too much stress
Reasonably close location
Reflects interests
Specialized Programs are cool high schools which offer emphasis on one or more particular subject fields in high school, such as Arts focused programs, STEM/STEAM programs, Sports programs, Leadership programs and more!

In addition, you can apply to high schools outside of the TDSB, such as Upper Canada College, or University of Toronto Schools (UTS) , which are independent private schools, often with high tuition fees, and are much more competitive than TDSB specialized schools. For example, UTS (University of Toronto Schools) has only a 10% admission rate.
For TDSB Students in Grade 8:
The TDSB has set up resources for 8th graders to select their high school in a program known as Beyond 8
