3 Pillars: Transforming Foot Binding through Art
In the "3 Pillars" project, I sought to transform the oppressive tradition of foot binding in ancient China into a powerful artistic statement, bridging the conceptual realm with the material world through repositioning and redesigning. Inspired by René Magritte’s "Shoe Sculpture," which merges functionality with surrealism, I chose embroidered traditional Chinese ceremonial shoes as my subject. These red cloth shoes, adorned with plum branches and flying dragons symbolizing happiness and felicity, were deliberately altered by cutting off and separating the toecaps to symbolize the inhumane practice of foot binding. Accompanied by antithetical couplets written in traditional calligraphy, the artwork juxtaposes cultural celebration with the ironic sacrifice of women’s autonomy. Throughout the process, I navigated the challenges of modifying the shoes and creating a meaningful context, conducting extensive research to accurately depict this distorted custom while maintaining a modern aesthetic. By blending historical symbols with contemporary design, my work aims to highlight the emotional and cultural repercussions of foot binding, offering a poignant reflection on women’s liberation and the enduring impact of oppressive traditions.
Second Universe
In the "Second Universe" project, I seamlessly blended holographic projection technology with traditional Chinese calligraphy to create a captivating visual experience. By projecting lifelike videos of the Terracotta Warriors within intricately designed calligraphy-inscribed columns, the installation bridges ancient history with modern innovation. This project involved carefully selecting harmonious calligraphy styles, optimizing holographic clarity, and designing an immersive spatial layout to enhance viewer engagement. I tried to integrate traditional art with cutting-edge technology, demonstrating interactive design and cultural storytelling.
Mountain
Mountain is an evocative installation inspired by a segment of the background music from the film "Interstellar." Instead of depicting a traditional mountain, this artwork portrays waves that mimic mountainous forms, symbolizing the collapse of tides. I chose to paint on dominos to emphasize the delicate balance and transient nature of these waves. The music's progression—calmness, approaching, and climax—guides the visual flow of the painting, capturing the emotional intensity of each phase. This innovative approach merges auditory and visual elements, exploring themes of impermanence and the intricate relationship between sound and imagery. "Mountain" invites viewers to experience the harmony and tension between natural forces and artistic expression, highlighting my ability to translate complex emotions and concepts into compelling visual art.
