The indoor greenhouse process at Harvest Free consists of two primary growing setups during the winter season. Every harvest begins with a single seed.
In 2026, I partnered with Holmes Seed Company in Canton, Ohio, to ensure high-quality, reliable seeds for the growing season.
The process begins inside my home in early February. I use five seedling heat mats to create the proper soil temperature needed for germination. Some seeds require light to germinate, while others do not, so each variety is carefully placed according to its specific needs.
An organic seed starting mix, Jiffy Substrates are used and once germinated, seedlings are transferred into an indoor grow tent equipped with full-spectrum grow lights. This controlled environment allows young plants to develop strong roots and healthy early growth while outdoor conditions are still too cold.
When outdoor temperatures consistently reach 55 degrees, the seedlings are moved to the secondary grow tent located in the garage. This larger space measures approximately 175 cubic feet and is equipped with a heater, ventilation fans, and grow lights to maintain a stable growing environment.
This two-stage indoor greenhouse process ensures that every plant gets the strongest possible start before being transplanted into the outdoor micro farm.
From seed to harvest, every step is done with care, patience, and purpose—to provide fresh, healthy food for those in need.
