For a hardware project I have I need to use a software like Digital Twin to build a test bed.
Due to project budget, Digital Twin is not available. Need to source an alternative with necessary capability. Pricing for Digital Twin is as of 3/15/2026, no longer listed.
First order of business is defining what a Digital Twin is and what it isn't. From the accumulation of data, digital twins seems to be a AutoCAD software that simulate real world physics. Similar software includes Google SketchUp.
Turns out that Google SketchUp is no longer outright owned by Google. Resources for SketchUp include the Trimble version - https://sketchup.trimble.com/en/plans-and-pricing/sketchup-free. Having leveraged this software prior, SketchUp provided an accesible environment. Alternatives were provided for items, easily accessible descriptions were provided. We were brought in on a beta phase before it was fully commercialized (if I recall correctly). Upon further research, the reason for the switching of the UI skins was due to mergers, not necessarily any timeline in the development process.
So looking further into Digital Twin (TM), it seems like the original offeror pulled their software or paywalled the access to the offering. From the concept art, Digital Twin (TM) seems to be a prototyping software on the market leveraging real life physics. Thinking further, is there a standard for those engines yet? Upon investigation, there seems to be some integration of standards and standardized materials into CAD modelling systems. Here is a brochure from IHS advertising the possibility - https://cdn.ihsmarkit.com/www/pdf/1119/3D-CAD-Industry-Standards-Brochure.pdf. Just because a capability is advertised, does not mean that the feature or function is available by default or that the feature or function comes with the system at all.
Standards organizations include ASTM, IHS(Accuris), JEDEC, NIST, and SAE. Not all organizations follow the newest standard. Just because one standard is followed for one contract does not mean the same standard is employed for a different contract. Definitions still need to be established for contracts and confirmed with customers. If you have a customer who continues to misunderstand you on purpose, it can really be a good move to find a different customer. Business negotiations and good customers are wonderful. Large sums of money with bad customers can hurt you long term incredibly. Remember your business niceties and understand some money is not worth taking.
Conclusion:
Digital Twin (TM) is a prototyping/modeling software. There are many like it on the market. The concept of a digital twin does not belong to one organization and there are many software offerings that allow for the same digital twin functionality everywhere.
As an aside, business etiquette shall be used against you, whether you learn it or not. There are always older etiquette books. Some jurisdictions have etiquette rules for situations. If you live in one area, you may be beholden to an older set of etiquette, and a newcomer is not to be informed as to the old etiquette rules. For some, this behavior serves as a delineation in class. And for others, it is taboo to even consider such things.
An example in hardware that is a tad bit older is the use of manual wire strippers versus automatic wire strippers. Automatic wire strippers are stereotyped as for hackers and implicate lower social standing within certain crowds. I have not seen this be exercised today and think it not practical to be implemented unless the company is to provide all of your tools. I own both sets of tools. I see no reason why not to. Money is money, the tools cost similar prices, and still I have been in a reduction in force. Note where your knowledge comes from.
Another side note. There are some jurisdictions and people who believe that once you are a defense contractor, you can never come back. That being said, many institutions often deal in weapons and do not say it aloud. Make sure to look at your company's entire portfolio before disgracing someone else needlessly.
At some point, if an organization needs to read Pride and Prejudice (I am finding a non-ethnocentric book that reflects the same values, Ayesha At Last has been brought forth, so we shall see), an organization needs to read Pride and Prejudice.
