Twisting algorithms into making people look like you are stalking them. Areas covered: data privacy, data targeting, platform security, targeting of individuals, protection from an event, interpersonal relationships, proper amount of online engagement, professional profiles versus personal profiles.
As a personal example, I took on a role at a company to not be named. Due to the nature of the work, I felt it best to leave my phone in my vehicle. For the following two weeks, various videos popped up on my Facebook feed (no app downloaded on my personal device, mind you) indicating the signs of working for a cartel that included "leaving your phone in the car." Other videos including the occasional ask "Why are you leaving your phone in the car?"
These are one off experiences and honestly they are laughable coincidences. And now I want to create a twist to the algorithm to create this type of control over someone's feed. Theory being if you can create it, you can defend against it. That being said, little girls very quickly release things that they cannot control, and this is a big can of worms. I have very little credibility left, so why not?
Standards:
A conversation on standards - Public Standards frequently serve as a moulding for which a base product is formed off of. Companies often create a standard (or set of rules) internally that either refine the outside standard to their product or companies have their own standard completely their own.
Implications:
Controlling one's feed while one is in the middle of a fight to make defensive positions known is an interesting thing. To make a person paranoid in a time of peace in order to shatter an industry is a liability.
Options Being:
Assuming a populace that has not recognized algorithmic disruption and subconsciously subverted it.
Deprive the individual of the app's influence (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
Counter Attack - Individual was being targetted, is now outside the realm of influence everyone else is obsessed with, they lose societal support - "Why don't you have a lebubu?" - "Why don't you know what a skibidi toilet is?"
Harness the algorithmic shifts by leveraging certain tactics - flooding persons feeds with values for certain individuals.
Downside potentially being individuals with different rules than other persons creating a systemic inequity that can at times be turned against the greater good for the majority.
Societal Implications:
Find repeated patterns in data. We currently have a data driven economy, or at least we did until we noticed it, and humanity has either accepted it or recoiled from it in fear. Data is transmitted from our cell phones and reported through cell carriers. Many of this data is sold between governments that include our eating, movement, and other habits. Education systems create docies on us and test us to determine where we might go within society according to a reinforced set of rules. When those are combined, we see patterns of behaviour that occur and might be done.
When combining this with certain already existing systems, we find that we either have no free will, or an abundance of free will until we are proven wrong again. Correcting a signal in electronics creates another series of problems within the systems and individuals are no different. Now to avoid a large amount of fears built up within our society through cautionary science fiction tales such as those depicted in Black Mirror, Twilight Zone, and Outer Limits, we need to understand what the worst case scenario is for the worst case scenario person in the system. What is the worst case scenario for the worst behaved signal?
When we integrate our society with a new technology such as a cohesive algorithm to provide ourselves entertainment, that is driven by our viewing functions, we become something different than what our overarching cohesive culture has provided us. Milestones and stories that we are all taught (albeit a white ethnocentric view, I shall admit) including Little House on the Prairie, Stella Luna, The Lost Mitten, Christopher Columbus become adulterated with incredibly different sets of new stimuli that take us from previously known "safe tracks" into systems that are unknown.
