Element 2A. Focus on Learning and Teaching, Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment The school executive leads the discussion about standards for curriculum, instruction, and assessment on research and best practices in order to establish and achieve high expectations for students.
At Mariam Boyd Elementary, one of the main focuses is to improve quality instruction and assessment. Ms. Tabron first disaggregated the data using the previous school years data to identify the number of students required for Grade Level Proficiency to increase proficiency by 10%. She created a plan for December to focuse on core instruction and reteaching standards based on assessments.
Additionally, Ms. Tabron was tasked with hosting Data Days for grade levels to establish discourse about student present levels and increasing student outcomes. Data Days are scheduled quarterly and practices are discussed for instructional gains.
Ms. Tabron has also created a Data Driven Instructional Calendar, or a DDI Calendar, to began to utilize as a way to begin using common assessments. This allowed each grade level to track assessments with standard-based data. She meets biweekly after school to lesson plan with teachers and unpack standards and understand the lesson framework.
She provides Professional Development to staff to increase the use of higher-yielding strategies in classrooms.
2B. Focus on Instructional Time The school executive creates processes and schedules which protects teachers from disruptions of instructional or preparation time.
Ms. Tabron helped create the school schedule for Mariam Boyd that provides teachers with built-in planning time for preparation.
At D.S. Johnson and Mariam Boyd, Ms. Tabron served also as the Test Coordinator. She created testing plans for the school. When doing so, she tried to allow teachers the ability to maximize instruction.
