What lies in our mind is our life. What is our mind, It is nothing but the accumulation of all our thoughts, feelings & memories, isn't it so?
Garbage in, garbage out. This is the same with body and mind.
This body & mind are fascinating & sophisticated tools for living. We need to learn the art of controlling the mind, otherwise it will control us. When you are learning Horse riding, in the beginning, the uncontrolled horse will control you. But by consistent practice, we can control the horse. Similarly, the mind needs to be controlled & made our friend. Else it remains as our unnoticed enemy, which pulls us down in life. Without control of mind, there's no peace and without peace, there's no happiness.
There are 3 uncontrollable's abbreviated as L.A.G, that corrupt our mind.
L.A.G - Lust. Anger. Greed
Lust - Uncontrolled desire of wanting someone or something.
Anger - Not able to control situations/people.
Greed - Uncontrolled want of something in excess.
Let us see some quotes on L.A.G
(a) “There is no disease so destructive as lust” by Chanakya
(b) "ANGER is one letter short of DANGER" by Eleanor Roosevelt
(c) “The world has enough for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed” by Mahatma Gandhi.
(d) "Lust, Anger & Greed are three doors to destruction" by Krishna
These lead to addictions, destroying everyone including the self. So how do we resolve this corruption?
There are two steps in controlling the monkey mind, which is difficult than catching the wind.
(1) Practice (Consistency)
(2) Perseverance (Dutiful Detachment)
One simple & powerful technique we can practice is commitment also called "bring it back". Just like a pilot redirects the flight each time it goes off track, similarly, we should also keep bringing the mind back to our very selves. (Simplest way of daily doing this exercise is by chanting/repeating a Vedic mantra and focusing on god. Each time you see your mind wandering just pull it and bring it back to god again.)
Now coming to the second step of detachment, if we can understand who we are? Who is god? What's this world? The purpose behind our existence? Then detachment is a natural way of mental and emotional maturity. Real knowledge brings detachment. I meant knowledge & not information. Also not to be confused that here detachment doesn't imply irresponsibility or giving up everything, it means dutiful detachment. For this we need not stop loving people, or quit our profession and family responsibilities, but what changes is the state of consciousness and intention behind doing these works. By achieving this we will not be disturbed irrespective of life's dualities like happiness & distress.
So keep monitoring your most valuable resource, your mind. What is present in it? Is that worth doing? This way of natural growth in spirituality can help us deal with many mental disorders and emotional instabilities.
