Which graduate school are you going to after GIS?
University of Tokyo graduate school
In which department, what are you studying ?
In graduate school of art and science, I belong to "Human Security Program" to research the topic.
How do you feel study and experience obtained in GIS valuable?
Being in an environment where I could study the liberal arts has always helped me to broaden my perspective and see things differently. Many students around me who have graduated from Japanese universities have studied specific academic disciplines. Although they are familiar with their areas of specialization, I feel they have little knowledge or understanding of areas they have not been exposed to. (e.g. lack of understanding of gender, lack of awareness of the influence of the media, etc.)
I wonder if the awareness of problems in society that I felt as a matter of course when I was in GIS was something that I developed because I was exposed to a variety of disciplines in that environment. I feel that it is because I was exposed to a variety of studies in that environment that I was able to develop this awareness. In this respect, I think another advantage of GIS is that it is easy to follow conversations with people who have experience in the working world!
In graduate school, most of the literature is in English, but because I had a lot of opportunities to output in GIS, I feel that it is surprisingly not difficult to give presentations and document the content of my readings. I don't find it hard to read English literature! Also, the amount of classes and assignments is more intense in GIS. At least so far!
