Cologne is Germany's fourth largest city. Ninety Five percent of the city was destroyed by bombing during WWII. After being rebuilt, Cologne has a modern big city feel, while maintaining a European style and charm. There are several museums and tours to choose from, including the Cologne Cathedral. You can see the interior of the cathedral on your own, or choose a guided tour. Walking along the Rhine is also a pleasant and relaxing experience. There are plenty of places to drink a locally brewed beer and people watch. Cologne is a stop for several river cruise ships as well.
Cologne was a good starting point for our tour with an easy walk to our hotel from the train station. We arrived in Frankfurt around 7:30 A.M, caught a train to Cologne, and had a lovely two-hour ride along the Rhine with gorgeous scenery. Scott and I always have a laugh or two about our actions after the fact. We had booked first class train tickets, and while waiting on our train, we were observing other trains to see which end was first class. Well, the trains travel in both directions, and I am not sure how many times we went back and forth dragging our luggage to get to the right end! That being said, If you fly into Frankfurt getting a train is an easy and convenient way to travel to other locations, not just Cologne.
Allison's Aha! Train tip: If you get queasy riding backwards, make sure to choose the right seat. Trains run in both directions, so try to sit in a forward facing seat.
