Day 12
Mauthausen Memorial was a very emotional experience for Scott and I, and I feel I speak for everyone who visits. Mauthausen, one of many such camps, was used as a work camp. Prisoners labored in the granite quarry, and essentially were worked to death carrying the heavy stone up the "stairway of death." They existed on a starvation diet, and were often shot to death if they couldn't carry the stones. Both Scott and I downloaded the app, and listened as we walked the grounds and toured the buildings. I had tears in my eyes several times. This camp functioned from 1938 to 1945,and nearly half of the 200,000 imprisoned here died. The museum shows the history of the camp, has inmate stories, artifacts, and even biographies of some Nazi officers. Give yourself time to reflect on your visit to Mauthausen and remember those who suffered here.
