Research
It is expected that once a student is admitted into Scholars they will become involved in activities and events that will allow them to excel in academic, service, and social contexts. As one additional opportunity, we encourage Scholars to prepare a project in hopes of presenting it in at least one honors research conference during their enrollment in the program. The conferences provide students with valuable and memorable experiences.
Research Group
Scholars are encouraged to join the Scholars Research Group, which is a supportive collection of people interested in pursuing topics of their choice, individually or in a small group, which may result in acceptance at one of the research conferences in which Scholars participate. You may also be in Scholars Research Group without applying to a conference. Dr. H. will post or send out an announcement about Research Group.
Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR)
The Southern California Conference on Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) is a one-day conference held each November on the campus of a college or university in the greater Los Angeles area. Its purpose is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of the best research, scholarship, and creative work of undergraduates in the region, and to encourage excellence in undergraduate achievement. Students present their work either in 15-minute formal panel presentations chaired by faculty members, in poster form, or in performance. The conference seeks to replicate the conditions of professional and scholarly meetings, and many undergraduate scholars use SCCUR as a "first conference" experience, before going on to present their work at national professional meetings.
Honors Transfer Council of California (HTCC)
UCI Community College Honors Research Conference
The HTCC holds an annual student research conference giving students in community college honors programs the opportunity to present the results of their work. The annual conference hosted at the University of California Irvine takes place each spring, usually at the end of March or on the first Saturday of April. Students are encouraged to submit research-based presentations and creative performances reflecting inquiry into the humanities, sciences, arts, social sciences and pre-professional programs. Presenting your work at the HTCC Student Research Conference makes you eligible not only for monetary awards but also to submit your work for publication in the HTCC anthology Building Bridges, published through the University of California, Irvine. The deadline to submit abstracts for publication is generally about 2-3 weeks after the conference.
Presentation Formats Include:
Research Poster Research posters displayed in the Pacific Ballroom in the Student Center; poster creators are on-hand during designated poster presentation sessions to discuss their research with the public
Individual Oral 12-minute presentation followed by 5 minutes of discussion
Small Group Oral 20-minute panel presentation by two presenters, followed by 10 minutes of discussion
Large Group Oral 40-minute panel of three or more participants, followed by 10 minutes of discussion
Performance Student-created art, music, creative writing, drama, dance performed and incorporating an explicit research component.
