If you play instruments with reeds, we highly recommend keeping three working reeds on hand at all times. Reeds need a breaking-in period, so it's essential not to use a brand-new reed for a performance unless absolutely necessary. By having a spare set of reeds, you'll be fully prepared for rehearsals and performances without any worries!
For our brass players, it's essential to maintain your instruments properly. Make sure to have a supply of valve/slide oil and tuning-slide grease. Properly functioning instruments are vital for the whole band to play in tune and create a fantastic musical experience together.
Remember, good instrument maintenance plays a significant role in ensuring a successful and enjoyable band experience for everyone.
It's important to have your own set of drumsticks, mallets, the bells, and a practice pad from the "bell kits." These kits are available for rent at the music store if you don't have them already.
To make sure you don't misplace your gear, please remember to label your drumsticks and mallets with your name. That way, you can easily keep track of your equipment and have a fantastic time during our percussion sessions!
We have convenient instrument lockers just outside the band room that students can use. To secure your locker, all you need is a combination lock (no keys, please). Just share the combination with the band director, and you're all set.
While having an instrument locker is optional, it's a great way to keep your instrument safe and easily accessible. Of course, if you have enough space in your school locker, you're welcome to store your instrument there as well.
For those who play very large instruments, we have a dedicated storage room at the end of the music hall. This room is exclusively for instrument storage and is reserved for those specific instruments. Rest assured, we've got a secure place for every instrument to call home!
It's really important for all members to consider getting insurance for their instruments. Unfortunately, the district doesn't have insurance coverage for theft or vandalism, so it's a good idea to protect your valuable instruments.
If you're renting, some rental plans actually include an insurance option, and I highly recommend taking advantage of that. It can give you peace of mind and protect you from unexpected situations.
On another note, we have a fantastic instrument company that will be visiting our school weekly throughout the entire year. Renting from them comes with some great benefits! They offer pick-up and delivery service, cover many repairs in the rental cost (without any extra charges to you), and they're even willing to provide a "loaner" instrument when needed, so your child can keep up with their studies.
To ensure we can identify and recover any misplaced instruments, please make sure to clearly mark your name on the instrument case and your band method book. Additionally, it's a good idea to have a copy of the instrument's serial number on file at home.
