Welcome to Grand Blanc East Middle School! Starting middle school is a big step for students and parents, and our band program is a fantastic way to begin. Beyond learning an instrument, it's where your child will build confidence, make new friends, and develop important skills like teamwork and focus that help in all areas of life. We are thrilled to welcome your student into our musical family, and this page has all the essentials to help you get started successfully this school year!

Band is a fun and exciting class where your child will learn to play a musical instrument and perform with others as part of a team. Students discover how to read music, understand rhythms, and create amazing sounds together. It's a unique opportunity to build confidence, make new friends, and develop important skills like teamwork and discipline that help in all areas of life.
This year, students will actively play their instruments, explore diverse musical styles from around the world, and truly learn the value of teamwork as every instrument contributes to our sound. We promise a fun and positive environment where your child will enjoy making music and growing as a musician! To make sure your student is ready for a fantastic year in band, here's a simple list of what they'll need. For your convenience, I've included some Amazon links below for these items:
Instrument: You'll find more details on choosing and getting an instrument below.
Essential Elements 2000 Book: This is our main learning book for the year.
BLACK, three-ring binder: This will help your child keep all their important music and handouts organized, and must be black for concert use.
Earbuds or Headphones: I will provide a basic pair of earbuds for each student at the beginning of the school year. Many students find it helpful to upgrade to a nicer pair for better quality and comfort.
COMBINATION PADLOCK: This is only needed if your student plans to use one of our instrument storage lockers at school.

Last Spring, Marshall Music visited our elementary schools to help your student find their best-fit instrument! You can view their recommended instrument for your child by clicking the link below.

In 6th-grade band, your student will get to choose from a variety of exciting instruments! Options include the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, and Baritone.
NOTICE: We will not be starting percussionist at the beginning of the school year. We will audition interested students in December to determine who will be our percussion section.

Every student in band is required to provide their own instrument. Most families choose the popular rent-to-own option from a reputable music company, which often includes helpful maintenance plans that cover repairs – a great benefit, especially for middle school students! You can also consider using an instrument from family or friends, or purchasing new or used. For any instrument not rented, it's very important to check its quality; be aware that very low-cost new instruments or those with non-traditional colors often signal poor quality. If you need advice on selecting a quality instrument, please reach out. We do have a limited number of school instruments available if necessary; please reach out to Mr. Hutchison for more information on these.
