To ensure every student can fully participate and succeed in band, all students are required to provide their own instrument. While many families find the rent-to-own option from a reputable music company to be the most popular and convenient choice, you can also consider using an instrument from family or friends, or purchasing a new or used one. It's crucial that any instrument, especially if not rented, is of good quality; beware of very low-cost new instruments or those with non-traditional colors, as these often indicate poor craftsmanship. If needed, we do have a limited number of school instruments available; please reach out to Mr. Hutchison for details. This page will guide you through all the different ways to acquire an instrument, helping you make the best choice for your child's musical journey.
You are welcome to rent/purchase your band instrument anywhere, but we strongly recommend getting it from one of the companies below. If you rent your instrument from marshall music, you can do it ONLINE, and they will ship the instrument to you directly.
In 6th-grade band, your student will get to choose from a variety of exciting instruments! Options include the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, and Baritone.
This can be a great option if the instrument is in good condition and suitable for your child. Please contact Mr. Hutchison with any questions you have about its condition.
If you're considering buying a used instrument, please reach out to Mr. Hutchison first. He can help you determine if it's a good deal, as many very low-cost new instruments are poorly made. Please also be aware that instruments in non-traditional colors (like red or blue) often indicate poor quality, and we strongly recommend choosing traditional band instruments. See the instrument information below to get started on looking for an instrument.

This is the most popular choice for families joining band, and it's also our most common and highly recommended approach. Reputable music companies offer rental programs that often include maintenance plans, which means repairs are covered at no extra cost to you. This is incredibly helpful, especially with middle school students! Always ask about their maintenance program when renting.
