Cast & Characters

The remnants of America are not only populated by strange creatures and mutants, but also even stranger people and robots!

Here is a review of some of the more unique characters you might run into.

Protectrons and Hauling Henry

Protectrons are incredibly common robots throughout the United States, and while they rarely served in domestic homes due to their design limitations, they served innumerable roles outside of households in society. In the wasteland, one may encounter police enforcement Protectrons, military Protectrons, and all manner of repaired/rigged variants that people have cobbled together.

Most notably is "Hauling Henry" a common Protectron whose legs have been replaced with treads (similar to those of a Robobrain) and has had a wagon welded to them. Thus constructed the Protectron is an ideal lorry driver and can serve a caravan or small community very well if maintained properly.

Model Notes:

Hauling Henry was constructed using a variety of failed 3d prints and spare parts... he wouldn't be too easy or too hard to replicate! Standard army green Protectrons shown here are the official models, while any variants were 3d printed.

T-51B Power Armor

While the first deployed Power Armor was the T45, and while the T60 dominated the domestic United States stockpile, it was the T51b that became "America's Darling" because of it's famous role in turning the tide of battle against the invading Chinese forces in Alaska. The T51b was also deployed on the Chinese mainland... and in some ways one could argue the T51b is partially responsible for the resulting nuclear exchange between China and the United States, because without it, the war would likely have never reached Chinese soil and the communist party never felt threatened enough to consider the "nuclear option".

As a result of it's deployment, the T51b is actually rarer than more advanced models in the United States, as most T51b-s were on active duty in China or Alaska when things went nuclear.

Depicted here, are also three somewhat rare and specialized weapons, from left to right we have:

  • The AER-7, one of the earliest production laser rifle, the model was bulkier and heavier than the far more common AER-9. As a result, it saw limited service with power armored troops in the great war.

  • In effect the same as a standard mini gun, the Winchester Trigun Special, was developed as a easier loading, simpler to maintain, and weatherized replacement for the miniguns being deployed on the Alaskan front. The weapon succeeded at it's design goals and most produced were shipped North. Today they can be more commonly found at surviving military facilities in the northwest US, Alaska, and Canada.

  • The Wattz-Yuma Laser Carbine was a joint venture to produce a heavier laser weapon than the standard rifle, with a focus on armor penetration. Ultimately the development of plasma weaponry led to the Carbine never seeing mass development and it remains a very rare weapon today.

Regardless, the weapon itself proved easier to aim and use than plasma weaponry, with superior armor penetration useful for ruining tanks or in theory enemy power armor. The downside of the weapon was it's limit of two shots before requiring significant cooling time. The weapon could fire 11 times ("a cheater's dozen") before burning through it's fusion core ammunition.

Model Notes:

The best damned thing on the whole Thingiverse in my opinion! I recommend printing the shoulders at 110% and the head modified to be 110% Z and 105% XY.

Lucas Garrahan

The Garrahan family were once wealthy magnates made rich by their vast mining operation throughout West Virginia, but were beginning to decline just before the war due to increased competition from mining companies that utilized robotics. To compete the Garrahan company developed the Excavator Power Armor but this vaunted piece of technology was never distributed beyond their headquarter facility.

With the coming atomic apocalypse and the subsequent "scorch plague" West Virginia became fairly uninhabitable and the Garrahan's were presumed dead. However, a single member of the family did indeed survive, Bryce... and while traumatized by the death of his fiancee, his family, and indeed, his very nation, he managed to migrate westward. Eventually marrying into a farming family in California, Bryce continued the family name and maintained their knowledge of mining techniques. This would prove fruitful several generations later, when the New California Republic emerged as a major power in the west and soon began developing a stable civilization.

With this stability came opportunity and the NCR's continued expansion required manpower, food supply, and most importantly... ammunition. While pre-war stockpiles were plentiful, they had long been ransacked by Raiders and others and so the NCR was willing to pay for anyone willing to mine lead and steel. The Garrahan family used their substantial holdings in cattle production to invest in reopening several abandoned mines and soon became one of the more powerful families in California.
