Bestiary of 2307

The wasteland is home to innumerable mutated species... some roughly equivalent to their original pre-war counterparts... others mutated beyond recognition by the Forced Evolutionary Virus!

Some unique lore and background has been written for some of my more colorful additions to my Fallout collection.

Leister Snail

(Harpoon Slug, Spiky Slimer, etc.)

Regions/Range: Southeast, Gulf Coast Environment: Ocean Beaches, Rivers

Behavior/Niche: Packs of Defensive Scavengers, Prey Diet: Omnivorous

  • Can fire projectile spikes or barbs at foes which are sometimes acidic and sometimes poisonous.

  • Some species can spit a blinding tar-like substance.

Description

Starting in circa 2290 the gulf coast has seen seasonal arrivals of large numbers of Sea Snails slime unto shore. These snails are not an immediate threat to travelers as they are generally content to stay together and scavenge along the coast or riverside, but if approached they will react by shooting dangerous barbs from their shells. These barbs are often poisonous or even acidic and can often penetrate moderate armor. Other reports suggest the creatures can spit a tar like substance to blind or immobilize attackers.

In all likelihood a variety of snail breeds are responsible for the differing reports. As time has passed, species of these snails have begun appearing along rivers throughout the southern United States. Many predators and humans are clever enough to hunt and kill the Sea Snails, and as long as caution is used they can prove less a burden and more a boon to local communities.

Model Notes:

Fun to paint, my first attempt at "ocean" or beachfront bases. The drift wood is cedar mulch that's been painted and I used UV Resin for the liquid effects.

Giant Jellyfish

Regions/Range: Any Coastline Environment: Ocean Beaches, Coastal Caves

Behavior/Niche: Defensive Scavengers, Prey Diet: Omnivorous

  • Most varieties are poisonous or paralytic to touch.

  • Some varieties are intensely radioactive.

  • Typically not aggressive, and will often retreat if moderately injured.

Moon Spawn

Regions/Range: North West & Northeast Coasts Environment: Shores, Caves, Underwater

Behavior/Niche: Swarms, Scavenger Predators Diet: Carnivorous

  • Live in wet/partially submerged coastal caves, require salt water to survive.

  • Encountered in medium sized groups, often part of a larger swarm.

  • Nocturnal Scavengers, but they will attack anything living they come across.

  • Breed by asexual fission (each "offspring" requires about 30% of the total mass of the creature)

Description

Moon Spawn are so named because they are completely nocturnal, and thus, only observable "in moonlight". They live in large groups of twenty or more inside caves along the northern coasts of the American continent... they are more common the further north one travels and seem to be completely immune to bitter cold.

Physically, the creatures are large and imposing, quite agile, and are remarkably good climbers and burrowers, however their overall running speed is lacking compared to other more dedicated predators. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that Moon Spawn are scavengers first, and while ferocious, they only attack creatures that come near them. If one stands about 20-30 feet away from them, it's unlikely a Moon Spawn will react. If however, one attacks or moves close to a Moon Spawn, they will like make a horrible screeching sound, and summon the rest of the swarm to engage the perceived threat. The creatures are highly territorial and any intruders within their nesting caves will be hunted and swarmed immediately at night, and only the stealthiest of explorers should dare their caves during the day.

It is unknown what circumstances led to the mutation/creation of these strange monsters, but it is believed that they are derived from some form of star fish, as the creatures breed asexually by fission exclusively.

Giant Coconut Crab

(Dune Crawler, Mischief Crab, etc.)

Regions/Range: West, East, Gulf, and both Canadian/Alaskan Coasts Environment: Ocean Beaches, Islands

Behavior/Niche: Lone Defensive Scavenger Diet: Omnivorous

  • Very strong armor and very powerful melee attack that can often hold an opponent in place.

Description

The Giant Coconut Crab is physically identical to it's forebear, but it's arrival upon nearly all the shores of the United States is somewhat unexpected, and it has adapted to survive in very cold weather. Heavily armored, the crabs are difficult to kill and can become extremely dangerous if enraged, and as such few seriously consider hunting them for these reasons. The claw strength of these beasts is quite terrifying and more than a few Death Claws and Super Mutants have lost limbs facing these crustaceans.

Caravan Crawlers

(Tamed Giant Hermit Crabs)

Regions/Range: Southeast, Northeast Environment: Forests, Swamps, Marshlands, Badlands

Behavior/Niche: Lone Defensive Scavenger Diet: Omnivorous

  • Extremely strong armor makes them nearly impervious to small arms fire.

  • Massive, slow, but often sporting a Howdah with weaponry and handlers.

Description

Though generally quite rare, Giant Hermit Crabs can be found throughout the eastern half of the United States, typically within swampy environments or brackish waterways. Despite their slow speed, awkward gait, and massive bulk, the Hermit Crab's penchant for using common rusted out vehicles as shells disguises them and allows them to ambush unwary scavengers.

In the south eastern regions of the United States, some human communities discovered that the Hermit Crabs were fairly easy to tame with regular feedings and gentle training methods. These communities quickly began to prosper and utilize the large crustaceans as beasts of burden... pull large hoes for farming, pulling or carrying large and heavy objects, and in some cases, as a armored military unit.

Indeed, the first militarized use of Hermit Crabs were used by militias against the invading Caesar's Legions in their eastern conflicts. Heavily armored, impossible to defeat with simple melee weapons, and capable of mounting a large armored howdah, the ensuing battles were a fascinating recreation of Hannibal's war elephants.

So impressive to the Legions were these creatures, that after the Legion's eventual (and costly) victory in the east, the reformed legions of Octavian's Centuriate adopted the use of these living war-engines. Today, Centuriate forces can be observed utilizing a variety of Hermit Crabs, armed with Howdah's and crew, carrying artillery, or even mounting massive battering rams. There is even one recorded instance where a heavily defended town gate was penetrated by an armored crab rigged with several mini-nukes was detonated upon reaching the doors.

Beyond the Centuriate, Hermit Crabs are used for transport or "Caravan Crawlers" by various trade companies and militias throughout the eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada (the Crabs doing surprisingly well in cold weather)... and are highly coveted assets.

Model Notes:

I had already had numerous large hermit crab toys from a previous project. The hermit crabs are of a toy-ish plastic, and generally not the best for painting... so I was prepared for this project to flop. Thankfully, it's worked out nicely. The bus is a simply six dollar die-cast toy from a Walgreens pharmacy, and as a Volkswagen, is old fashioned enough to fit into Fallout. Once I began construction, I realized, that the bus was rather plain, and that bits could spice it up and increased detail would distract (slightly) from the lacking detail of the crab claws... but it wouldn't be entirely logical for a Nuka-Cola machine to be stuck to a bus... I didn't have the supplies for vines or such, so I came to the idea of a howdah. I generally wish Fallout games had more creative uses for mutant creatures and more attention to a workable economy and ecology... the Hermit Crab represented an excellent opportunity to explore how humans might exploit mutated nature.

Slime Bellied Salamander

(Swamp Drake, Spitfire Skink, etc.)

Regions/Range: Southeast, Northwest, Canada Environment: Rivers, Swamps, Marshland

Behavior/Niche: Family groups, Predator, Territorial Diet: Carnivorous

  • Has a debilitating/paralyzing secretion on it's skin, making it dangerous to engage in melee.

  • Spits and ignites napalm like fluid as a defensive measure.

Description

The Slime-Bellied Salamander is also known as the "Swamp Drake" and "Spitfire Skink" depending on the region where it is encountered. The creature earns it's fascinating names by virtue of it's paralytic slime that coats much of it's body, and it's terrifying ability to discharge and ignite a napalm like spit at it's foes. Thankfully the creatures are not terribly aggressive hunters and subsist on much smaller prey that they can find within the mud and waters of their favorite haunts. It would appear that both abilities have evolved as defensive measures against other larger, faster, and stronger predators such as Deathclaws.

Though the creatures are most commonly found in the southeastern regions, cold-weather varieties that can hibernate have been observed in the northwest and along the Canadian borderlands.

Piranha Frogs

(Progs, Pot-Sticker, Rain-Piglet, etc.)

Regions/Range: Southwest, Midwest, Southeast Environment: Swamps, Rivers, Lakes

Behavior/Niche: Swarms, Opportunistic Predator, Prey Diet: Carnivorous

  • Dangerous in large numbers and sometimes found cohabiting with Frog-Maws.

Description

Hibernating for long periods of time, the Piranha Frog or "Prog" only emerges from underground burrows to feed and breed during serious rainfalls. The animals have also been observed actively living within sewer systems and other wet environments.

Whilst dangerous in large numbers, compared to most creatures of the wasteland the Piranha Frog is rather underwhelming, possessing no great armor, speed, or poison. Indeed, to many communities the Piranha Frog represents a bounty to be harvested and eaten during wet seasons and they are coveted for their medicinal qualities as well.

Piranha Frogs are typically found throughout the mid-west and southern United States and seem to avoid coastal areas.

Boardgame: Cthulhu Wars

Frog-Maw

(Lagoonies, Mudmen, Frogladites, Gill Bears, etc.)

Regions/Range: Southwest, Midwest, Southeast Environment: Swamps, Rivers, Lakes

Behavior/Niche: Small Groups, Opportunistic Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Frog-Maws may have a relationship with Piranha Frogs and they have been observed peaceably cohabiting.

Description

Large bipedal frog and fish like monster, the so-called "Frog-Maw" is a dangerous, but generally uncommon predator living in swamps, rivers, and lakes throughout the Southeast and Midwest United States. Though rarely encountered, the creatures' penchant for ambush and colorful visage make a strong impression and they have earned many nicknames such as "Mudmen", "Lagoonies", and "Gill-Bears".

Some believe that the Frog-Maw is a offshoot breed of Mirelurk, however, this is easily disproved by observations that Mirelurks and Frog-Maws will not share territory and will displace each other whenever possible. Currently BOS scribes believe that the common Piranha Frog may indeed mature into Frog-Maws in the event that they have long-term access to water... regardless, the two species share significant genetic commonalities and must at least share a common ancestor.

Blue Scaled Basilisk

Regions/Range: Southwest, Arizona, Mexican Borderlands Environment: Deserts, Caves

Behavior/Niche: Lone Opportunistic Apex Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Scaled armor uniquely deflects almost any amount of energy weapon damage.

Description

An extremely rare and extremely dangerous predator, the Blue Scaled Basilisk is a massive snake with resplendent scales that are often described as blinding when viewed in daylight under the hot sun of it's desert homes. Living in the most inhospitable areas of the south western deserts the Basilisk is usually buried in the soil, or dwelling within a cave and waits months, even years, until a worthy prey stumbles past it.

Local communities are often aware of any nearby Basilisks and stay well clear of them, and some tribes in Arizona even offer sacrifices to the beasts and appreciate it's general presence as it tends to keep other alpha predator populations in check.

Other than it's size, heavy armor, speed, terrible fangs, and crushing coils... it is presumed the Basilisk is also poisonous, but no humans have survived it's massive bite long enough to have this theory tested.

Rad Roach

Regions/Range: Everywhere Environment: Anywhere

Behavior/Niche: Swarm Scavengers Diet: Omnivorous

  • Harmless except in large numbers.

Description

The Rad Roach is a simple scavenger and tends to stay close to it's own kind when possible. Sometimes, groups of Rad Roaches can pose a significant threat when roused. Otherwise, Rad Roaches are generally considered a plentiful if unappealing food source by most others.

Miniature: Official Miniatures

Steel Mites

(Rust Wolves, Metalvores, etc.)

Regions/Range: Northern Midwest, East Coast, Canada Environment: Junkyards, Factories, Landfills

Behavior/Niche: Pack Hunters, Territorial Diet: Carnivorous, Metalvorous

  • Eat and consume precious metals, attacks can damage armor and weaponry.

  • Moderately clever pack hunters.

  • Carapace is made of metal and extremely strong compared to normal insects.

Description

Steel Mites" also known as "Rust Wolves", have evolved from the common pill bug and similar to their ancestors, Steel Mites are excellent at removing heavy metals from the soil. However, unlike their ancestors Steel Mites will proactively hunt and consume any metals they can, which they use to grow hardened carapaces and require to produce offspring.

Otherwise, the insects generally subsist on a diet of anything unlucky enough to come across them, and though they are not known to purposely engage humans, it is likely they would do so if those humans possess weapons and armor made of precious metals.

Notably, after Steel Mites have nested in a area for a few months, they generally leave for new pastures and the land they inhabited is significantly improved ecologically and often ideal for agriculture. Careful settlers will note a Steel Mite nest and earmark the site for future expansion.

Rad Scorpions

Regions/Range: West-coast, Southwest, Southeast, Midwest, East-coast Environment: Badlands, Deserts, Forests

Behavior/Niche: Small Groups, Ambush Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Burrows underground in order to surprise ambush it's prey.

  • Encountered in small groups or alone.

  • Many varieties utilize deadly poisons.

Description

The Rad Scorpion is a dangerous giant insect, not least because of it's penchant for lying in wait burrowed just under the ground, but also because of it's deadly claws and poison tipped stingers. Though once limited to the Western United States, the Rad Scorpion has proven adaptable and has now extended it's range throughout the continent... it does seem to be held at bay by the cooler temperatures of the north... for now.

Miniature: Official Miniatures

Giant Spiders

Regions/Range: Everywhere Environment: Anywhere

Behavior/Niche: Small Groups, Ambush Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Burrows, hides, jumps, and uses webs to ambush prey.

  • Encountered in small groups or alone.

  • Many varieties utilize deadly poisons.

Description

While the Rad Scorpion is perhaps the more fearsome giant arachnid of the Wasteland, they are actually relatively rare compared to the Giant Spider. That being said, Giant Spiders typically go after smaller prey than themselves, preferring to hunt Rad Roaches and other vermin. Careful settlers have even found the presence of some Giant Spiders to be beneficial for this reason... and yet, there are other varieties that will attack anything moving on sight and possess deadly or paralyzing poisons. Ultimately Giant Spiders are both ubiquitous and unpredictable in the wasteland of 2307.

Cave Spiders

Regions/Range: Everywhere Environment: Caves, Ruined Buildings

Behavior/Niche: Medium Groups, Ambush Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Burrows, hides, jumps, and uses webs to ambush prey.

  • Encountered in small or medium groups.

  • Many varieties utilize deadly poisons.

Description

So-called Cave Spiders are very similar to other Giant Spiders with the exception that they tend to rely more on webbing and nets, and are generally more territorial. Cave Spiders also breed in larger numbers and tend to stick together, creating very loosely defined "colonies" within a cave complex of the ruins of a large building or sewer.

Greater Preying Mantis

Regions/Range: Southwest, Southeast Environment: Deserts, Forests, Jungles

Behavior/Niche: Mated Pairs, Ambush Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Instant camouflage ability, comparable to a Stealth Boy.

  • Almost always encountered in pairs.

  • Can leap enormous distances to escape or charge.

Description

The Greater Preying Mantis is massive compared to the simply Giant Preying Mantis of the Southwest, and is a stealthy alpha predator that hunts in pairs. Fascinatingly, the pairs of Mantids are always life-long mates, very much unlike the widow-making mating habits of the past... BOS Scouts have made reports that would even suggest that the pairs raise their young, which if true, would imply a far greater intelligence than normally conferred to giant insects.

When hunting, the Greater Preying Mantids will stealthily flank their opponent and use their incredible ability to shift their camouflage in real time to approach almost invisibly. Once in striking range the two Mantids will attack ferociously and dismember their target without warning. If for whatever reason their prey proves too dangerous the Mantids will quickly attempt to camouflage or use their incredible legs to leap a great distance away.

Ant Lord

Regions/Range: Southwest, Mexican Borderlands Environment: Badlands, Mountains, Deserts

Behavior/Niche: Swarm Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Takes control of a local Ant Colony and will be accompanied by Ants.

  • Extremely aggressive towards human settlements.

Description

Along the former border of the United States and Mexico the many badlands and deserts are populated by a variety of giant ants. These colonies are typically no more or less dangerous than those throughout the rest of the former United States. A new development however, has begun to change the character of these ant colonies and has resulted in much of the South Western expanse becoming increasingly uninhabitable for humans.

This development would be the spread of so-called "Ant Lords". These psuedo-ants are descended from spiders and have evolved to mimic and control the ant colonies they infiltrate. Once embedded within a colony the Ant Lord mimics their Queen's pheromones to trick the ants into feeding and protecting them. When matured, the Ant Lord itself begins to hunt large prey, often bringing many smaller ants with them.

Large ant colonies have now been observed supporting a dozen or so Ant Lords amongst them... Their numbers, strength, and size poses an extreme threat to anyone or anything living nearby... and while typical ant colonies are not particularly aggressive, the Ant Lords often stir them into a frenzy.

It is unclear whether the presence of Ant Lords within a colony eventually becomes fatal to the ants themselves or not, and thusly whether they should be classified as a symbiotic or parasitic organism... but it is clear, that the increased aggressiveness and the lethality of the Ant Lords themselves makes any infected colony a grave threat to local communities.

Model Notes:

These are highly modified Cthulhu Wars miniatures... I took the Mi-Go models, removed the front arms/wings, added larger eyes, additional claw arms, as well as "hand" clawed arms. I'm happy with the result, though I do wish I had achieved a better paint-job/scheme... I wanted something akin of Fire-Ants and I'm not certain that I got exactly what I wanted.

Board Game: Cthulhu Wars

Rad Worm Leviathan

Regions/Range: Any Nuclear Site Environment: Extremely Radioactive Sites

Behavior/Niche: Lone, Territorial, Opportunistic Predator/Scavenger Diet: Omnivorous, Radiovorous?

  • Ultrasonic wave attacks can push and injure enemies in 360 degree arc.

  • Can burrow through rock or concrete like butter.

  • Relatively weak armor for it's size, but capable of regenerating tissue at a rapid and constant rate.

Description

Rad Worms are of course, extremely common throughout the wastelands of the United States, and are generally no larger than a pre-war garden snake. The creatures are typically quite harmless, using their glowing tendrils to attract small insects to them in the night, and then suddenly revealing the rest of their buried body from the sand or dirt in a sudden lunge to catch their prey.

Why exactly the tiny predators themselves are attracted to radioactive locales is unknown, but any wanderer knows that if they see a python sized Rad Worm, it's time to leave as this indicates dangerous levels of radiation. The Rad Worm Leviathan, is a remarkably rare occurrence, of the tiny creature having survived and nested in an intensely radioactive site, such as a leaking nuclear power plant, or a cavernous nuclear waste dump.

Using it's innate ability to use ultrasonic waves to help it effortlessly tunnel through earth and stone the creature can easily hunt anything foolish enough to wander into it's territory... Furthermore, it's massive bulk and regenerative powers makes it a difficult predator to shake off or overpower.

Finally, the creature has also been observed by Enclave scientists, to use it's ultrasonic abilities to produce a dangerous defensive "wave, pushing any number of combatants away from the creature... Giving it time to escape or regroup as necessary.

The Rad Worm Leviathan's greatest weakness is it's relatively poor armor and low intelligence, but these can be difficult to take advantage of, if one encounters the Leviathan unprepared.

Saber-Tooth Triger

Regions/Range: Northwest, Midwest, Canada, Alaska, Southeast Environment: Badlands, Forests, Marshland, Tundra, Mountains

Behavior/Niche: Lone Ambush Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Will observe and stalk prey for days before striking.

  • Avoids attacking groups.

Description

It is unclear if the Saber-tooth Triger is actually descended from Tigers or Mountain Lions or perhaps a hybrid of the two species... but the three headed hunter is a extremely agile and dangerous predator regardless of it's pedigree.

Tales of the Triger come primarily from the south east United States... areas such as Texas, Kentucky, and Georgia, and as far north as Virginia. These tales are quick to note that the Triger only ever hunts alone, and will efficiently dispatch it's prey using any one of it's three sets of powerful jaws during a sudden ambush. After killing the prey, the Triger typically carries the victim into a den, cave, or up into a tree and will then consume it.

Notably, whilst many predators of the Wasteland simply attack upon seeing prey, the Saber-tooth Triger is known for patiently observing and in essence "looking before it leaps"... so that it may carefully choose a target weaker and smaller than itself. Trigers do not commonly hunt humans or Super Mutants unless they are traveling alone, and often prefer to prey on the livestock of nearby human communities.

Miniature: Malifaux's Saber-Tooth Cerberus

Bear

(Yao-Gui)

Regions/Range: Anywhere Environment: Badlands, Forests, Marshland, Tundra, Mountains

Behavior/Niche: Lone Opportunistic Predator/Scavenger Diet: Omnivorous

  • May hibernate in caves in cold weather climates.

  • Fierce claws and strong attacks can stagger nearly any foe.

Description

Bears have done well since the Great War and have remained mostly unchanged since... the only real exception being that the behavior of most Bear species has become far more aggressive when approached by humans or other animals.

Today, some bears appear normal, whilst others have adapted to radiation and are marked with glowing sores, but regardless of the "flavor" of Bear, their immense strength and sharp claws make them a dangerous creature to approach.

Deathclaw

Regions/Range: Everywhere Environment: Anywhere

Behavior/Niche: Small Groups or Lone Apex Predator Diet: Carnivorous

  • Often encountered alone, but larger family groups are possible, led by a powerful matriarch.

  • Extremely strong and quite agile with deadly claws.

  • Chameleon variants are quite stealthy.

Description

The Deathclaw is by far the single most successful predator of the wasteland, and while there are larger creatures, none quite possess the superior combination of speed, ferocity, determination, and intelligence of the Deathclaw. As a result of these fantastic traits, the species has spread to all of the North American continent and into Canada (presumably into Mexico as well).

Miniature: Official Miniatures

Abomination

Regions/Range: Canada, Northern Midwest Environment: Super Mutant related Hideouts

Behavior/Niche: Lone, Territorial Scavenger Diet: Omnivorous

  • Seemingly indifferent to pain.

  • Numerous eyes and telepathy makes it capable of detecting any creature regardless of stealth capabilities.

  • Telepathic Communicator

Description

The Super Mutants of Zion have conducted many experiments that the original Master would have approved of, and none has been so hideous as the "Abomination" project. It's unknown exactly what the Super Mutants were trying to achieve but the result seems to be that they can simply dump a large number of human and animal prisoners into a vat of specialized FEV solution to create a single amorphous organism of teeth, muscle, and eyes.

The Abomination is very slow, and very strong, and seems immune to any form of pain (probably because it is in a state of constant, maximum pain) and can suffer enormous damage before being felled and never retreats. This however, is not the Abominations real purpose, instead, it is the creature's many eyes and telepathic senses, which allows it to detect any intruder in a significant area. In effect Abominations can silently observe and report on a locale to any nearby Super Mutant. That Super Mutants also talk to the Abominations and seem to ask for advice is also disturbing.

Evolved Floater

Regions/Range: Anywhere Environment: Super Mutant related Hideouts, Radioactive Sites

Behavior/Niche: Small Groups, Aggressive Territorial Scavenger Diet: Carnivorous, Radiovorous?

  • Attacks are highly radioactive and acidic.

  • Seems to have a regenerative effect on nearby Supermutants and Ghouls.

Description

Few among the living will have firsthand or even secondhand knowledge of "the Master" or his terrifying array of creatures that served his army. Indeed, after the Master's Army was defeated it's remnants fled east and generally scattered into obscurity.

Amongst these remnants was a giant mutated flatworm known as the "Floater". These dangerous creatures would accompany Super Mutants on patrol and act as a sort of hideous hunting dog.

Apparently, after the death of the Master most floaters simply parted from their Super Mutant handlers... whatever hold the mutants had on the Floaters seemingly broken. These Floaters preyed upon local wildlife but over time disappeared and an outside observer could be forgiven for thinking that the species had simply gone extinct.

Some Floaters however, actually took residence within toxic waste dumps, radioactive pools, and other hazardous zones... where there unique FEV infected biology continued to evolve. Notably, the unique biology of Flatworms (possessing both male and female sex organs) rendered them largely immune to the FEV penchant for rendering organisms sterile.

As a result the Evolved Floater (or Glide-Worm) has survived to this day, it now possesses numerous eyes, and tends to remain dormant within irradiated pools until suitable prey happens by. Notably, some rare bands of Super Mutants have managed to tame Evolved Floaters and their radioactive nature tends to heal the Super Mutants in their vicinity. Thusly, the Floater is no longer an active combatant as such, but more of a field medic in Super Mutant forces.

There is no pattern to the distribution of Evolved Floaters throughout the United States and they are extremely rare. It is likely that different pockets of Evolved Floaters will continue to diverge and evolve into new species.

Board Game: Cthulhu Wars

Corpse Breeder

Regions/Range: Anywhere Environment: Caves, Abandoned Buildings

Behavior/Niche: Small Groups, Territorial Mind-Controller Diet: Carnivorous, Parasitic

  • Has telepathic abilities that can force opponents to move where it desires them to move to.

  • Can attack opponents with a telepathic wave of pain.

  • Often accompanied by other creatures enslaved to it's will.

Description

The Corpse Breeder is a true monster, hideous in body and insidious in nature. Beginning life as a parasitic worm the larval Corpse Breeder will often be ingested by a host organism. Once within, the larva breeds and produces more larva and together they parasitically feed off the host. Over time, the parasites exert mental control over the host as well, and encourage the host to eat as much as possible, feeding the larva within. Eventually, the host is saturated with larva and nears death at which point it will be compelled to find a cave or other dark and cool sanctum.

Finally dying from malnutrition and organ failure the larval Corpse Breeder larva will feast on the remains of the host and then curiously merge into a single colonial organism... the adult Corpse Breeder itself. Being colonial, the adult's form is an inconsistent mass of fleshy tendrils, eyes, and the occasional maw of hardened carapace for ingestion.

The new organism possesses a fascinating ability... the power to mentally influence nearby creatures. Using a sort of telepathic suggestion it will lure other creatures to its lair and either consume or infect them. Infected individuals fall completely under the control of the adult Corpse Breeder until they eventually expire and transform into another adult. The new adult may choose to stay and coordinate with it's parent, or leave and find it's own lair. The largest groups of Corpse Breeders encountered is three are referred to as a Triad.

Ultimately, the Corpse Breeder is one of the more dangerous mutants of the wasteland, often living in a cave or abandoned building and using a small cadre of enthralled creatures, super mutants, or even humans to care and protect itself. Thankfully, Corpse Breeder larva require significant sustenance and time within their host to grow and propagate and this limits the options for hosts to larger and longer lived creatures. Such creatures are not overly abundant and this limits the Corpse Breeder ecological impact.

The origins of this fiendish monstrosity are unknown, some suspect that they are a mutant variant of a worm like creature known as a "floater" created by FEV experiments. Indeed super mutants seem to have a special innate fear and awe for Corpse Breeders bordering on reverence; which would suggest a connection to FEV or the Master of the west coast. Biologically however, the creatures shares more in common with hook-worms and is more commonly found in the south eastern regions of the United States.

Board Game: Cthulhu Wars

Snallygor

Regions/Range: South East, West Virginia Environment: Radioactive Sites, Bogs, Marshes

Behavior/Niche: Small Groups, Territorial, Ambush Predator Diet: Carnivorous, Radiovorous?

  • Extremely toxic bile that it can spit at fairly long ranges.

  • Long prehensile tongue that it uses to hold prey.

  • Strange and unpredictable movements.

Description

West Virginia was home to the hideously mutated "Snallygaster", the result FEV experimentation by West Tek and the Enclave forces in that region. It would appear that over the many decades since it first appeared, the Snallygaster has become rarer and rarer, but in it's place the smaller and perhaps even stranger "Snallygor" has evolved.

Not much is known about these tri-legged and tri-armed creatures, but they lurk in swampy waters and preferably ones that are highly radioactive or polluted. When encountered, a group of Snallygors will react aggressively, some will charge their prey whilst others will hang back and hurl a tar-like poisonous bile. Local communities often claim that Snallygor blood or organs have medicinal or even magical abilities and it isn't uncommon for hucksters to sell various potions claiming to use Snallygor sourced ingredients.
