In my Honors BIO102 class, we had to do end-of-semester projects. We had to pick a Research paper that was published and make an abstract on a website. We also had to further explain the research conducted and back it up with other sources. I really enjoyed this project because I was able to research and talk about something that I am very passionate about.
In my Forensic Ethics course, I was assigned a research project with a partner, Gabrielle Highland. We had to pick a forensic case where there were many ethical and legal issues so we could learn from the mistakes, so history doesn't repeat itself. We chose the Ford Height Four Case. We each wrote a paper about the topic and then made a short presentation to teach the class about the case.
In my Professional Writing class, we had to find a problem on campus or off that we could research and try to fix and/or better. I put together a proposal to try to fix the problem of sexual assault on college campuses, especially at IUPUI. I was then able to put together a brilliant team of a few of my classmates. Dylan Richardson, Sophie Turner, Sadie Parra, and Aj Cyrus all worked with me for weeks to put together a recommendation report that we turned into CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Servies at IUPUI). With our data, we hope to make an actual difference on campuses.
In the Spring of 2024, I competed in the School of Philanthropy's scholarship competition, Pitch Your Passion. I didn't win the main full-ride scholarship, but I did walk away with $1500 to help with my tuition. During this all-day event, I worked with two other students to put together a PowerPoint and speech in two hours. We didn't know our topic until the two hours began. Our topic was Mental Health and we had full creative freedom to do whatever we wanted. Kensdiana Fleurant and Jasiah Komenda were my two amazing partners, and I am very proud of what we were able to put together in such a short amount of time. I would also like to acknowledge our two coaches who helped us complete this task and feel good about it, Zoie Alger and Kimberly Hestermann.
In Fall 2024, I took a Genetics and Molecular Biology course as part of my degree. For our final project, we were tasked with selecting a recent research paper or article highlighting a new discovery in genetics. We summarized the study, outlined the key issues it addressed, and evaluated how effectively the article communicated the findings. I chose a paper on Forensic Genetics, which I found fascinating. This topic was especially meaningful to me, as it closely relates to my major and aligns with my interests in forensic science.
